Roma are reportedly intensifying their efforts to secure the signature of Mats Hummels, with the move contingent on Chris Smalling’s potential transfer to Saudi Arabia. Siamolaroma report how Roma’s interest in Hummels dates back to June when Saudi clubs first approached Smalling. However, the English defender opted to stay at that time, putting the potential swap on hold. Now, with renewed interest from Saudi Arabia in Smalling, Roma is revisiting the possibility of bringing Hummels to the Italian capital.
The 34-year-old Hummels, who has personal reasons for wanting to stay close to Munich due to family commitments, has been waiting for an opportunity in central Europe, despite interest from MLS and Arab clubs. Roma has rekindled talks with Hummels’ father, who also acts as his agent, offering a one-year contract with an option for an additional season.
However, the completion of this deal hinges on Smalling’s departure, which is expected to be finalized soon. Roma faces a deadline of September 4th to submit their UEFA list, adding urgency to conclude these transfers promptly.
