La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Roma’s focus this summer is not just on reinforcing their attack, but also to secure a leader to guide the backline. According to the newspaper, new sporting director Ghisolfi has zeroed in on Mats Hummels, the Borussia Dortmund center-back who is out of contract.
Ghisolfi has made initial contacts with the player’s entourage about a potential free transfer. Hummels’ current €3.7 million per season salary would not be an insurmountable obstacle for Roma. Reports suggest the experienced defender would even be willing to take a pay cut for a two-year deal with an option for a third season.
The 34-year-old would form an authoritative partnership with Gianluca Mancini in defense. His vocal presence and leadership could provide crucial guidance during intense moments, preventing Roma from wasting energy on dissent towards officials and opponents.
Even in a potential three-man defense, Hummels’ positioning and organizational skills would be invaluable alongside Mancini and N’Dicka, forming a resilient “dam” at the back.
