Roma have reportedly made an audacious effort to sound out Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso as they look for a successor to Jose Mourinho. The Special One is yet to pen a contract extension with the Giallorossi, and has just six months left on his existing deal with the capital club

La Repubblica claim that both Mourinho and compatriot Tiago Pinto are expected to leave the club this summer, leaving Roma in need of a new head coach.

According to the paper, Roma CEO Lina Souloukou is in charge of the clubs long-term plans and has been charged with finding a potential replacement for the Portuguese tactician.

La Repubblica suggest that the first name on the list to replace Mourinho is Alonso, although the prospect of bringing him to the Italian capital would be ‘extremely complicated.’

Despite the likely obstacles, Souloukou has reportedly made a first enquiry to check Alonso’s availability next summer.
