Evan Ferguson’s Roma Future Takes Another Hit As Irishman Faces Spell On Sidelines
Roma are unsure over Evan Ferguson's future after the striker's recent injury concerns.
Evan Ferguson is facing another setback in his Roma career, as the Irishman faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury.
Evan Ferguson Injury News
The 21-year-old has been hit with another blow to his Roma career, as the Irish international suffered a back injury during the Giallorossi’s 2-0 win over Sassuolo on January 10th.
Ferguson was forced off five-minutes before half-time and was unable to continue his recent run of form, after contributing to three-goals in his previous three appearances.
His spell in Rome has been far from perfect up to this point, scoring just three goals in 16 Serie A appearances and failing to cement a place under Gian Piero Gasperini.
The Giallorossi are looking to bring in a striker during the January window and this has been amplified after Ferguson’s injury as Roma target Robinio Vaz.
Ferguson has been ruled out of Roma’s Coppa Italia clash against Torino on January 13th and could miss all of the Giallorossi’s fixtures this month.
Roma are also dealing with another issue in attack, as Artem Dovbyk is dealing with a hamstring issue and added further stress to the Giallorossi’s injury crisis.
Dovbyk and Ferguson’s futures in Rome have been called into question, with the latter being considered for an early exit this month.
Roma Question Evan Ferguson’s Future
Roma signed Ferguson on loan for the 2025/26 season and the deal included a €37million buy-option alongside the initial €3m loan fee.
This clause is not an obligation, meaning Roma have the option to send Ferguson back to Brighton and this appears to be the most likely outcome.
Gasperini has not been blown away by Ferguson’s performances and the Roma boss may be unwilling to spend €37m during the summer.
The need for Ferguson has also lowered after Roma’s deal with Aston Villa for Dutch international Donyell Malen and the Giallorossi remain keen on Joshua Zirkzee.
In the latter stages of 2025, reports began to circulate over a possible termination of Ferguson’s spell in Italy and the striker’s time could be cut short if Roma bring in multiple reinforcements this month.
The Giallorossi are currently fourth in Serie A and are hoping to strengthen their side as Gasperini’s side are just four-points behind table-topping Inter.
