Roma are ready to cut ties with Evan Ferguson as the Irishman is set for another spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury.
Evan Ferguson Injury Update
Evan Ferguson has not traveled to Greece for Roma’s Europa League clash against Panathinaikos, as the Irish international deals with yet another injury issue.
The Roma star missed two Serie A games in November with an ankle sprain, before aggravating the injury again during the Giallorossi’s league clash against Sassuolo on January 10th.
This forced the Irishman to miss Roma’s 2-0 win over Torino on January 18th, before being utilized as an unused substitute against AC Milan most recently.
Ferguson is expected to be ruled out of Roma’s next three matches, as the Giallorossi face Panathinaikos, Udinese and Cagliari.
The 21-year-old has scored five goals in 22 appearances across all competitions, as Ferguson continues to struggle in the Italian capital.
Roma are looking to make multiple additions to their roster in the summer, as Gasperini’s side has entered the race for Weston McKennie amid rumors over an exit from Juventus.
However, the Giallorossi must make room for any potential signings by cutting ties with some of their current roster and this could bring an end to Ferguson’s time in Serie A.
Roma Willing To End Ferguson Loan Short
The Giallorossi have already shown that struggling loan players will be sent back to their parent club, as Roma ended Leon Bailey’s spell with the club.
Bailey failed to make an impact in Italy and the Jamaican international made his way back to Aston Villa – despite moving to Rome on a one year deal.
Evan Ferguson may face a similar situation if his performances do not improve, while his repeated ankle problems continue to concern the Giallorossi.
Roma were preparing a move for Gianluca Scamacca in hopes of finding a reliable goalscorer, but the Italian is closing in on a new deal with Atalanta.
Gasperini has been very vocal about his frustrations towards Ferguson’s performances so far and the Roma boss has reportedly prioritized a striker this summer.
The Giallorossi would have to pay €37m for Ferguson due to the buy-option in the initial deal with Brighton and the Serie A side do not want to pay this fee for Ferguson.
Making a return to the Premier League appears to be a likely outcome for Ferguson after attracting interest from Nottingham Forest and West Ham – but his latest injury setback has deterred any interested party.
