Leon Bailey has failed to impress after signing for the Giallorossi on loan in August and the Serie A side have spent a huge amount on the Jamiacan so far.

Things could not have gone much worse for Leon Bailey during his opening months in Rome, as the Jamaican looked to revive his career away from Aston Villa.

After struggling to accumulate many minutes under Unai Emery, Bailey decided to swap the Premier League for Serie A and joined Roma on a season-long loan with an option to buy for around €22 million.

Unfortunately for the 28-year-old, his opening training session with the Italian side would rule him out for months after the Jamaican suffered a tear in his rectus femoris.

This injury sidelined the Aston Villa loanee for each of their opening six Serie A matches, as Bailey picked-up his first appearance for the Giallorossi on October 18th.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side sit second in Serie A after earning 21 points from nine league matches, with just four goals conceded and are level on points with table-topping Napoli.

Since returning from injury Bailey has made four appearances across all competitions, coming off the bench in three and starting during Roma’s 1-0 victory over Sassuolo on MD8.

The Jamaican is yet to register a goal or assist and Bailey endured a frustrating night in Roma’s latest league clash, as he was taken off at half-time after coming on as a substitute in the eighth minute.

Roma are now considering the possibility of ending Leon Bailey’s loan spell early as the 28-year-old has already cost the club a huge amount this season.

Alongside a €3m loan fee, Roma are paying the entirety of Bailey’s salary and the Jamaican is reportedly earning around €6.5m per year – making him the joint-second highest paid player at the club.

Bailey signed for the club on August 20th and did not feature until October 18th, meaning Giallorossi supporters waited for just under two months to see their summer signing.

The Jamaican is said to be earning €124,615 per week, which Bailey cost Roma €996,920 before he even appeared for the Giallorossi and this has now risen to €1,246,150 (10 weeks since his arrival).

When looking at the money spent per minute Bailey has been on the pitch, it gets even worse for the Jamaican as he has only accumulated 127 minutes across all competitions.

This means that Bailey has earned around €9,813 for every minute that he has played for Roma this season, a worrying stat for Gian Piero Gasperini.

Losing this amount on Bailey will not be what Roma had imagined when signing the Jamaican and the Giallorossi are already eyeing up replacements.

According to reports, Roma are interested in signing Joshua Zirkzee and the Dutchman would be another option in the attacking area if Bailey suffers another injury.

Another aspect that needs to be taken into consideration is Roma’s initial €3m loan fee, as the Giallorossi will have paid over €5m to see Bailey compete in just a handful of matches.
