After months of negotiations, the San Siro stadium has been officially acquired by AC Milan and Inter Milan.
The Serie A giants struck a deal in the region of €197million with the local council to buy the iconic venue and the surrounding land.
A further €1.3bn will be spent to construct the new stadia. Demolishment is expected to start in 2027 and the rebuild is set to be completed in 2031.
The new San Siro will have a slightly reduced capacity of 71,500 and will also be used as a host venue for the 2032 European Championship. A tournament of which Italy are co-hosting alongside Turkey.
However, will the stadium benefit both Milan and Inter? Furthermore, will it have the desired impact to help reclaim both clubs status as European heavyweights?

San Siro Stadium Purchased By AC Milan And Inter Milan
On November 5, it was confirmed that both AC Milan and Inter Milan had acquired the San Siro stadium and its surrounding land. In laymen’s terms, both clubs now own the venue and surrounding land outright.
They are expected to push on with their plans to demolish the iconic stadia ASAP. A brand new soccer cathedral will be built in its place which will be much more ‘up-to-date’ and modernized.
The news comes as a huge relief to both sides who only had until November 10 to make the deal happen. If a deal was struck after that date, the second tier would be legally protected from demolition under Italian law.
Thus scuppering plans to proceed with building a whole new venue that is fit to serve purpose. Now that that is not the case, supporters can look forward to attending the new venue in six years time.
Will The New San Siro Reaffirm AC Milan And Inter Milan’s Status As European Powerhouses?
Supporters of both AC Milan and Inter Milan will be very much hoping that is the case. In theory, it’s hard to envisage that the new San Siro won’t have the desired effect the two clubs want.
Granted, the capacity will be decreased slightly but the slick new design and extensive work that will go into the venue will remind soccer fans just how globally popular Milan and Inter are.
In its current state, the San Siro is extremely outdated and in some ways, it has made the stadium less fearful for opposing sides. Some consider it to be almost dilapidated which hasn’t helped their cause on the European stage and beyond.
Fast-forward to 2031 when the stadia is ready, it will be the envy of soccer-enthusiasts all over the world. In fact, most will likely marvel at its stature and it will almost certainly put AC and Inter firmly back on the map.
What Major European Clubs Have Benefited From Building A New Stadium?
The San Siro – in its current form – was at risk of exclusion from Euro 2032. That threat and the fact the stadium was in desperate need of TLC helped fast-track AC Milan and Inter Milan’s plans to upgrade.
When looking across Europe’s major clubs, many have benefited from playing in a brand new venue. They include the likes of Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Juventus, Manchester City and Tottenham.
Granted, not all of them have filled their trophy cabinets just for moving into a new home but their statue and status has been reaffirmed or furthermore, increased dramatically.
A prime example of that comes in the form of West Ham. The English Premier League side may not own the London Stadium but their boosted capacities and ability to lure bigger players to the club have increased since moving in 2016.
In 2023, the Hammers won the Europa Conference League under the guidance of David Moyes. Admittedly, supporters may not like their home stadium but it has certainly helped increase their profile across Europe.
The same can be said of Spurs. The north Londoners often host NFL games and they too have had European success. Moving into a new home can prove very profitable financially – something of which AC and Inter strongly desire.
What Other Clubs In Europe Are Aiming To Build New Stadiums?
Once the new San Siro is complete, it will serve as a reminder of just how important an updated or brand new venue can be to Europe’s elite.
Global giants Manchester United have drawn up plans to leave Old Trafford. Chelsea have also toyed with the idea but building in London can prove tricky and logistically difficult.
Perhaps that is why the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona have decided to expand instead of leaving the Bernabeu and Nou Camp altogether. Their homes are truly iconic so increasing capacity is a more cost-effective option.
Newcastle, Birmingham, Valencia and Hamburg are also keen to move into new stadia. Closer to home, Roma is expected to move into the AS Roma stadium in 2028.
Similar to AC Milan and Inter Milan, the Giallorossi will be hoping that they too can become global powerhouses.
