Inter Milan And AC Milan Aiming To Buy The San Siro Land Before September 19

Inter Milan and AC Milan are aiming to buy the San Siro land within the next fortnight as plans to construct their new stadium gather pace. 

The Serie A giants have been hindered by a number of obstacles over the past few months in their pursuit to build a new soccer cathedral.

Both clubs were keen to demolish the original structure. However, that will not be prohibited owing to historical grounds and bureaucratic hurdles.

Now, the plans for the new San Siro will involve building a new stadia adjacent to their current home. There had been talk of the two rivals building separate grounds in the wider Milan metropolitan area but that won’t be happening.

Who Currently Owns The San Siro?

Last month, it was reported that Inter Milan and AC Milan were close to purchasing the San Siro. This is still very much the case but who currently owns the iconic venue?

The stadium belongs to the Milan city council. This trait is common throughout Serie A with respective councils owing stadia. However, Atalanta, Juventus, Sassuolo and Udinese own their homes outright.

If Inter Milan and AC Milan secure ownership, that will allow the plans to build the new stadia much easier as both teams want a new venue by 2030.

Originally, the Italian giants wanted to completely demolish the San Siro. Now that isn’t possible, the only way to construct a new home is to buy all of the surrounding land.

Why Do Inter Milan And AC Milan Want To Buy The Land In Two Weeks?

The reason for the haste in purchasing land is due to an injunction that would thwart the second tier of the San Siro being demolished.

The plan has always been to keep parts of the iconic venue intact. It’s likely that ‘old’ parts of the venue would be used as a museum and/or club shops.

This is in line with the authorities and Milan city council as ripping down the current San Siro completely will not be prohibited.

Time is somewhat against the Serie A heavyweights with the injunction due to come into effect in mid-September. According to Corriere dello Sport, Inter and AC will seek to purchase the land in the next seven days.

If that isn’t possible, the two week proposed deadline will provide extra time to get the deal sealed. If and when that happens, the two sides are expected to announce further updates about the construction of the new stadium.
