Gianluigi Donnarumma has left AC Milan fans furious, after the former Rossoneri star selected Napoli alongside Milan for his favorite Serie A sides.

The Italian shot-stopper made a huge move during the summer transfer window, leaving Paris Saint-Germain to join Manchester City after falling out-of-favor under Luis Enrique.

Donnarumma’s departure from PSG came as a surprise to a host of supporters, as the Italian played a vital role in guiding the Ligue 1 side to their first Champions League trophy.

During his time in Paris, Donnarumma made 161 appearances for PSG winning four Ligue 1 titles, three Trophee des Champions, two Coupe de France trophies and Champions League.

The 26-year-old had already made an instant impact in Manchester, putting in a strong performance during his debut against Manchester United as the Cityzens won the derby 3-0.

Pep Guardiola’s side will compete in their opening Champions League fixture on September 18th, as the Premier League giants welcome Napoli to the Etihad Stadium.

Prior to the match, Donnarumma was asked about his expectations for Napoli and revealed that the Serie A champions are his family’s chosen team – despite the Italian spending eight-years with AC Milan.

Donnarumma said: “I spent eight years at Milan, and I’m a big fan, just like I am of Napoli. For me, it’s hard to choose.” 

After coming through the ranks in Milan, Donnarumma debuted as a 16-year-old in October 2015 and went on to make 251 appearances for the Rossoneri.

The Italian goalie received huge backlash when he decided to leave Milan for PSG in the 2021 summer transfer window and went from hero to zero in the eyes of supporters – something that has been worsened after selecting Napoli as his favorite Serie A side.

Why Did Gianluigi Donnarumma Join Manchester City?

Donnarumma was made surplus to requirements in Paris as Luis Enrique decided to bring in a fresh face in goal – signing Lucas Chevalier from Nice.

Many believe that the decision came as Enrique prioritized a goalkeeper that is extremely capable with their feet and Donnarumma has faced criticism over this aspect of his game in recent years.

As rumors of a summer exit began to circulate, the Italian was linked to multiple clubs around Europe and decided to join Manchester City.

The Cityzens had already signed a new number one, signing James Trafford from Burnley, but Guardiola decided to bring in another star goalkeeper – while also pushing Ederson out of Manchester.

The Italian is expected to start for Manchester City against Napoli and Donnarumma recently revealed why he joined Pep Guardiola’s side despite interest from Serie A.

The Manchester City star said: “My only choice was to come here, so I am happy to be here at City and be part of this fantastic team. Before the summer I knew that City were very interested in me, the relationship strengthened after the Club World Cup.

“I knew the coach was pushing for my arrival here, everyone wanted me here, it gave me such pride to see such a demonstration of affection. I didn’t hesitate to come here with great joy and enthusiasm.”
