Who Are The Last Five Capocannoniere Winners And Where Are They Now?

The Serie A top scorers from the last five seasons are some of the most recoignizable names in global soccer. 

In fact, some of the greatest ever players to take to the field have at some point won the Capocannoniere throughout their illustrious careers.

Foreign imports such as Pedro Petrone, Gunnar Nordahl, John Charles and Michel Platini have all won the coveted award.

More well-known figures from the last three decades such as Diego Maradona, Marco van Basten, Gabriel Batistuta, Andriy Shevchenko and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to name but a few can all boast the Capocannoniere on their CV.

Domestically, some true legends of the game have also won the Capocannoniere – also known as the Paolo Rossi Award (since 2021).

They include the likes of Gianluca Vialli, Ciro Immobile, Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero. However, here at FootItalia, we are going to take a look back at the last five winners and see where they ply their trade now.

Serie A Top Scorer For 2024-25

The Serie A top scorer for 2024-25 was Atalanta sharpshooter Mateo Retegui. The Azzurri international racked up an impressive 25 strikes to win the Capocannoniere.

Juventus have already eyed up a swoop for Retegui with the Dea reportedly setting a €60million price tag. The 6ft 1in hitman was also named in Serie A’s Team of the Season and was named Serie A’s best striker.

Who Are The Last Five Capocannoniere Winners?

Atalanta star Mateo Retegui is the most recent Capocannoniere winner after scoring 25 times for Atalanta in 2024-25. Prior to that, current Inter and Argentina star Lautaro Martinez won in 2023-24.

The year previous, Victor Osimhen of Napoli rattled home 26 goals as the Azzurri won the Scudetto in 2022-23. Looking further back, Lazio goalgetter Ciro Immobile won the Capocannoniere in 2021-22.

In 2020-21, Juventus and Portugal hero Cristiano Ronaldo was the Serie A top scorer. The then 35-year-old scored an impressive 29 times.

Where Are The Last Five Capocannoniere Winners Now?

Mateo Retegui and Lautaro Martinez are still with their respective clubs for whom they won the Capocannoniere award with. However, their futures are often in doubt owing to their goalscoring exploits.

Ciro Immobile left Lazio last summer to join Turkish side Besiktas. Even at the age of 35, Immobile still scored an impressive 15 goals in 29 league appearances this season.

Victor Osimhen and Cristiano Ronaldo are almost certainly on the move. Osimhen is still contracted to Napoli but spent the season on loan at Galatasaray.

Ronaldo left Turin for Manchester United in 2021 and then moved onto Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr. He confirmed on May 26 he will be seeking a new venture.

Who Is Serie A’s Highest Ever Goalscorer?

Serie A’s highest ever goalscorer is Silvio Piola. The legendary forward scored an incredible 274 goals in Italy’s elite soccer division across 533 appearances.

Piola played for Pro Vercelli, Lazio, Juventus and Novara in the top tier throughout the 1930s-1950s. He was also part of the Azzurri side who won the 1938 FIFA World Cup.

Naturally, Piola scored twice in the finale against Hungary. The Italians won 4-2 to clinch their second FWC success in France. Piola is considered one of Italy’s greatest ever soccer players and won two Capocannoniere Awards.

The Most Capocannoniere Awards

The player with the most Capocannoniere awards is Milan and Sweden legend Gunnar Nordahl. Between 1950 and 1955, Nordahl finished as the Serie A top scorer on five occasions.

He and Michel Platini are the only players to win the Capocannoniere across three consecutive Serie A seasons. In total, Nordahl scored 225 times in Italy’s elite division for the Rossoneri and Roma.

Ciro Immobile has four Capocannoniere awards to his name with the likes of Platini, Giuseppe Signori and Paolo Pulici all boasting three victories.

Serie A Top Scorer In A Single Season

The Serie A top scorer across a single season is an honor shared by Gonzalo Higuain and Ciro Immobile. The former scored 36 times for Napoli in the 2015-16 campaign.

Immobile equalled the stunning tally for Lazio in 2019-20. That was the third time the Italian legend had won the Capocannoniere award.

Before Serie A’s founding in 1929, there were a couple of other stars who also netted 36 times in a single league campaign in Italy’s top flight. Julio Libonatti and Gino Rossetti did so for Torino in the late 1920s.
