Shevchenko: ‘Super League was a madness that was wiped out in two days’

Former Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko believes the Super League project is a ‘madness’ that was wiped out by the fans in two days. The Ukrainian coach published a letter in the times and touched on the topic of the Super League which was backed by a number of Europe’s elite clubs, who ultimately abandoned the idea shortly after it was announced.

“For real fans, it doesn’t matter if their team plays in Serie C, Bundesliga or Premier League. They dream and live their passion, passing it on to their children, generation after generation.

For these and a thousand other reasons, that selfish madness called ‘Superleague’ was wiped out in just two days. First of all, by the fury of the fans. By people who live football from morning to night. By people who go to sleep and wake up thinking, ‘When is the next game?’ The same people who sleep in their team shirts and proudly wear their teams’ scarves to work.

Those who wanted to change this have never smelled the grass of a playing field, have never really cheered in the stands, and do not know what it feels like in a locker room or in a hostile away game.

Despite all their millions, these are poor people who cannot understand the true beauty and power of the game of soccer. Fortunately, the world has remained united in defending the history and principles of soccer.”
