Thiago Motta Pushing For Fresh Start As Italian Manager Looks To Rebuild Reputation After Disastrous Juventus Spell

Thiago Motta is reportedly pushing for a return to Serie A management, as the Italian looks to rebuild his reputation after a horrible spell at Juventus.

Why Did Thiago Motta Fail At Juventus?

Thiago Motta began his senior managerial career in October 2019, after being appointed by Genoa, but the Italian struggled to adapt to life as a coach and parted ways with the club after winning just two matches in two months.

After a short break away from the sport, Motta took the reins at Spezia for the 2021/22 season and began to show the league why he had been touted to become a strong coach – helping Spezia avoid relegation.

This led to Motta taking a step-up and managing Bologna, where he truly made a name for himself and implemented a style that is now synonymous with the former PSG midfielder.

Motta managed 70 games in Bologna, finishing ninth in his debut season and then guiding the Serie A side to Champions League football for the first time in the clubs’ history.

Following this success, the 43-year-old was handed one of, if not the, biggest jobs in Italy as Motta became the leading man at Juventus for the 2024/25 season.

However, Motta struggled to implement his style in Turin and was often criticized for for being stuck in his ways, failing to rotate the squad and drawing 16/42 matches.

Juventus’ Champions League fixtures also brought some heat towards the Italian, as the Bianconeri were eliminated in the Ro16 playoffs by PSV – with Motta being sacked a few weeks later in March 2025.

Igor Tudor came in to Turin as Motta’s replacement, guiding Juve back to the Champions League places and earning a permanent job for the 2025/26 season.

The Bianconeri have made a strong start to the Serie A campaign, winning both of their opening matches and keeping clean sheets on each occasion.

Will Thiago Motta Manage In Serie A Again?

The former Juve manager has been out of the managerial game for just under six-months, with the Italian taking some time away from soccer to re-group.

Motta is expected to make a return before 2026, if the correct job is on offer and the Italian’s agent, Dario Canovi, revealed that the 43-year-old has received several offers already.

Dario Canovi said (Via Telelombardia): “Thiago Motta will become a great coach. He’s received several offers. Even today he received an offer from abroad. He’ll have to find the right situation for him.”

Multiple managers are currently in limbo, with Erik ten Hag leaving Bayer Leverkusen after just two league matches and the Dutchman has now been linked with a move to Serie A.

Thiago Motta may follow a similar path despite interest from outside of Italy, as the former Bologna boss is reportedly looking to rebuild his reputation in Serie A.

So far during his short managerial career, the Italian has managed 146 Serie A matches, winning 55, drawing 45 and losing 46, boasting a win rate of 37.7%.
