Serie A Sides Ready To Make January Move For Unsettled Tottenham Star Following Champions League Squad Exclusion

A host of Serie A sides are reportedly interested in making a move for Mathys Tel during the January transfer window, after the youngster was left out of Thomas Frank’s Champions League squad.

Why Was Mathys Tel Left Out Of Tottenham’s Champions League Squad?

Mathys Tel suffered a major blow in recent weeks, as Thomas Frank decided to leave the Frenchman out of Tottenham’s Champions League squad.

The 20-year-old completed a €35 million move to north London after a short-term loan in 2024/25 and this deal was activated days after Thomas Frank was appointed by the Lilywhites.

However, the former Bayern Munich star has struggled to make an impact this season, accumulating just 19 minutes from two substitute appearances in the Premier League so far.

Frank has clearly been unimpressed by the French international so far and Tel will not be competing in the Champions League group stages – with James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Radu Dragusin, Kota Takai and Yves Bissouma also missing out.

The Champions League squad selection is an interesting period for teams around Europe, with new signings making their way into the side, which was highlighted by Rasmus Hojlund’s inclusion in Napoli’s UCL roster.

But for Tel this will be a major setback for and the 20-year-old recently gave his opinion on Thomas Frank’s decision – taking an extremely respectful approach towards the situation.

Tel said: “It’s definitely a disappointment, I would have liked to be there. But the coach’s choice is the coach’s choice, we can only respect it and we’re going to work to come back in the best possible way.

“He called me, he simply told me his choice and then you could see the list appear on the networks.”

Despite this show of respect, Tel’s future in north London has now been called into question and the Frenchman has been linked with a move away from Spurs in January.

Could Mathys Tel Move To Serie A?

The summer transfer window has only been closed for just over a week, as teams around Europe now look to build some momentum with their new additions.

However, the January transfer window will bring another chance to add some more firepower towards the end of the season and Mathys Tel could make a switch to Serie A at the start of 2026.

Tel’s deal in England does not expire until June 2031 after signing a six-year deal with Tottenham, meaning a permanent move is quite unlikely.

This means that any interested party would need to offer a tempting package that begins with an initial loan deal, something that could intrigue AC Milan.

The Rossoneri are currently trying to extend Christian Pulisic’s contract in Milan, as the United States international’s current deal is set to expire in June 2027.

Massimiliano Allegri is also dealing with a major loss in the attacking lineup, with Rafael Leao missing the opening two league matches through injury.

With Pulisic and Leao both having issues, the seven-time Champions League winners may be looking for some attacking options in January – making Tel an intriguing option in January.
