Former Inter Milan and Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini recently shared his thoughts on his time with the Nerazzurri in an interview with Il Messaggero. Sabatini expressed regret over his departure from Inter, stating, “It was foolish of me to leave. I was an immeasurable idiot: you don’t leave Inter, just as you don’t leave Roma, but in that case I was forced to. Pallotta’s decision to appoint a consultant completely overshadowed the role of the sporting director, who was left as nothing more than a punching bag.”
Reflecting on his achievements at Inter, Sabatini proudly claimed that his most significant contribution was bringing Alessandro Bastoni to the club, saying, “The best thing I did was to bring in Bastoni, whom I strongly wanted.”
The conversation then shifted to the increasing presence of foreign ownership in Italian football. Sabatini compared his experiences at Inter under Suning’s ownership to the American ownership of Roma: “At Inter, I had to serve as a springboard for Suning and their experienced management. The Friedkins, on the other hand, haven’t understood that Roma is nothing without its people.”
When asked about potential talent for Inter, Sabatini highlighted a promising young player from Roma’s ranks: “It’s Niccolò Pisilli. He covers ground well, has personality, and moves the ball effectively. He’s a player who could perform well for any top club.”
