Roma midfielder Gini Wijnaldum gave an update on his recovery and revealed he ‘cried for several days’ after first getting injured. The Dutchman is expected back in January, having sat out the first part of the season with a fractured tibia he suffered in August.

Speaking with ESPN.nl, Wijnaldum discussed his gradual return to fitness:

“Rehab is going in the right direction. When the injury first took place I cried for several days, I was sad.

Now I live like a monk, let’s say, but I feel very good. I am seeing a lot of progress, even though I now live away from my family. I come back to Holland on weekends, it’s a sacrifice I have to make. Now, I’m completely on my own.

I really only see two places every day:my apartment and the training ground. I just have to get over this moment as soon as possible.”
