Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna. The 23-year-old has penned a five-year contract with an option for a sixth year at Old Trafford.
While the exact transfer fee remains undisclosed, reports suggest it could range between €53 million and €61 million. The deal structure allows United to pay the fee in three installments, with the base amount estimated between €42.5 million and €46 million.
Zirkzee expressed his excitement about joining the Red Devils, stating, “Having had discussions with the manager and the leaders of the club I know how exciting the future is going to be here and I cannot wait to play my part in achieving success for Manchester United”.
The transfer marks a significant step in Zirkzee’s career following his breakout season at Bologna, where he netted 12 goals and provided 7 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions. His impressive performances helped Bologna secure European qualification for the first time in 60 years.
United’s acquisition of Zirkzee comes after fending off strong interest from AC Milan. The Italian club had initially reached an agreement with the player but balked at paying the additional €15 million commission to his agent, Kia Joorabchian.
As part of the deal, Bologna will only pocket around €20 million plus bonuses from the transfer, with Bayern Munich entitled to 50% of the sell-on fee due to a clause in Zirkzee’s original transfer to the Italian club.
Zirkzee’s versatility and unique skill set, combining the physical presence of a target man with the technical ability of a playmaker, made him an attractive prospect for United. His arrival is expected to provide additional firepower to the Red Devils’ attack as they aim to compete on multiple fronts in the upcoming season.
