Roma targeting Rennes defender Arthur Theate

Start

Roma’s transfer market activity continues to gain momentum as the club sets its sights on Arthur Theate, the Belgian defender currently playing for Rennes. The 24-year-old, who previously played for Bologna in Serie A, has been on Roma’s radar since last year when Jose Mourinho expressed interest, with support from Romelu Lukaku.

La Gazzetta dello Sport detail how Daniele De Rossi, Roma’s current manager, has requested a fast center-back to complement the team’s defensive options, especially with Chris Smalling and Marash Kumbulla potentially departing. Theate fits this profile perfectly, known for his speed and aggressive style of play.

Rennes values Theate at around €20 million, including bonuses. Negotiations between Roma and the player are reportedly progressing well, with Theate open to a five-year contract worth €2 million per season.

The Belgian international is versatile, capable of playing as a left-sided center-back in a four-man defense, occasionally as a left-back, or as part of a three-man defensive line. Standing at 185 cm and weighing 78 kg, Theate combines physical strength with agility and is noted for his ability to initiate play with his left foot.

During his two seasons in France, Theate has made 82 appearances and scored 8 goals, demonstrating his offensive capabilities as well. He has previously expressed his fondness for Italian football, hinting at a potential return to Serie A.

While an official offer has not yet been submitted, talks are underway, and Roma’s sporting director is working tirelessly to strengthen the squad. Theate’s potential arrival would align with the Friedkin group’s transfer strategy, focusing on young, talented players with room for growth.
