New Salernitana coach Fabio Liverani was presented to the media today and talked about his plans to try and guide the club to safety. Liverani was seated alongside club director Walter Sabatini who shared his thoughts on the new appointment and explained why he feels former coach Filippo Inzaghi deserves an apology:
Sabatini began by acknowledging Inzaghi’s departure and his own role in the team’s struggles, stating, “I apologize to Inzaghi because I did not help him enough. The January transfer market progressed slowly due to various contradictions and unfavorable episodes that conditioned me. At the beginning of January, I should have brought in players, but I failed, thus not aiding a struggling coach. I apologize to him from a human and professional point of view.” Despite setbacks, Sabatini expressed confidence in Liverani’s abilities, emphasizing, “We have not given up. I know within myself that we will save ourselves. The defeat against Empoli was an almost definitive blow, but I don’t care. I have a new coach full of ideas and motivations.” Sabatini concluded with a stark assessment of the team’s chances, stating, “After the defeat against Empoli, the survival rate is 3.5%.”
Following Sabatini’s remarks, the CEO Maurizio Milan expressed gratitude towards Inzaghi while affirming the club’s commitment to turning the tide. Milan stated, “We thank Inzaghi, a man of great human qualities, but together with the president and director Sabatini, we have decided to give new impetus to the club. There is still room to accomplish a feat that the club and the city deserve. We believe that Liverani is the right person to boost a team that, especially against Empoli, was faltering. We are still convinced, especially President Iervolino, that we can do it. We will stand by the director because we believe in the endeavor.”
Liverani, taking the podium, acknowledged the challenges ahead, remarking, “I have seen the team, it is evident that it has undergone changes after the transfer window. There is not much time, there is a desire to create something game by game, without giving ourselves tables or creating tables. We must think about playing and becoming a team with important collective values. There are the qualities of individuals, and I have accepted because I believe we can approach the teams above us.”
