“This defeat creates some problems”: Spalletti reflects on Italy’s loss to France

Start

Following Italy’s 3-1 loss to France in the Nations League, national team coach Luciano Spalletti shared his thoughts on the match and the team’s overall performance.

Spalletti began by addressing the challenging start to the game: “Unfortunately, that’s how it is… when you could have a more relaxed evening, you go in and immediately concede a goal from a set piece. Then we didn’t stay calm because we forced the game and spent a lot of energy. It’s also a bit random with all the set pieces. At 2-1, it seemed there was more balance, then the other set piece created problems for us. They closed up, and it became difficult to find spaces.”

The coach highlighted the team’s struggles with ball possession: “What created problems for us was the lack of clean play. We allowed them to close up, and consequently, we needed to have a lot of quality in ball possession and in tight spaces.”

Despite the defeat, Spalletti maintained a positive outlook on the team’s overall progress: “Assessment? It’s positive. We’ve seen the commitment of the boys, and even tonight we saw good things. It’s clear that this defeat creates some problems in terms of conviction and confidence, but it shouldn’t take away the certainties we’ve acquired.”
