Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo have been dropped from the national team after it was revealed the pair are being investigated. The pair are reportedly the latest to be investigated in a betting probe that is rocking Italian football, with Juventus youngster Nicolo Fagiolo having already spoken with the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office.

ANSA news agency reported that the pair were spoken to by police at Italy’s Coverciano training centre as part of the probe. The FIGC have now released a statement confirming that the duo have been sent back to their respective clubs as they were not in the right frame of mind to take part in the Azzurri’s EURO 2024 qualifiers:

“Regardless of the nature of the events, considering that the two players are not in the necessary condition to face the matches scheduled for the next few days, the Federation has decided, also for their protection, to allow them to return to their respective clubs.”
