The Atalanta U23 side will be clocking up some serious miles this season after they were placed in the southern group of Serie C.

Although the campaign is already underway, many will wonder why a club based in the north of Italy is competing in such a division.

As for results on the pitch, Salvatore Bocchetti’s men lost their opener to Latina 1-0. The following week produced an emphatic 6-2 win over Casarano.

What Is Atalanta’s Shortest Away Trip?

The shortest trip that Atalanta U23 will face this season has actually already been and gone. The MD1 clash vs Latina was a round trip of 1,360km.

Supporters who opted to attend the match from Bergamo via car would have done so in approximately 14 hours. That is some credible dedication but in the grand scheme of things, it barely scratches the surface.

The furthest away day is a 2,864km round trip to take on Siracusa. For those who wanted to drive, estimates suggest it will take 28 hours there and back.

When it comes to the senior side who boast stars such as Ademola Lookman, they will travel more luxuriously than their reserve team counterparts on away trips.

Why Are Atalanta U23 In The Southern Section Of Serie C?

The reason why the Atalanta U23 side is competing in the southern section of Serie C this year is due to a rotation method that is commonly used.

There are three ‘B’ clubs in the Italian third tier who are Atalanta, Inter and Juventus. Rulings are put in place so that the trio all compete in different divisions.

So, Inter are playing in the northern section with Juve playing in the center section. That leaves Atalanta to play in the southern section.

Every season the three sides are rotated so more often than not, Inter and Juve will also play in the southern section of Serie C.
