The AI Supercomputer at FootItalia has predicted what a new stadium could look like for Napoli, after Aurelio De Laurentiis called Stadio Diego Armando Maradona ‘a dump’.

Will Napoli Build A New Stadium?

Stadio Diego Armando Maradona has been Napoli’s home for over 65 years, as Gli Azzurri have welcomed teams to the iconic soccer stadium since 1959.

Although the stadium has been around for several decades, its current name was only issued in December 2020 following the passing of Napoli icon, Diego Maradona and was originally called Stadio San Paolo.

Despite the rich history within the ground, Aurelio De Laurentiis recently made a damning statement over the current facilities and believes Napoli are falling behind other European sides.

This decision comes just a matter of days after Inter Milan and AC Milan acquired the San Siro, meaning they can beginning plans to create a modern stadium by 2031.

Multiple teams around Europe have found huge success with a new home ground, as Tottenham Hotspur won their first piece of silverware in 17-years last season – while also seeing huge financial gain.

The Premier League side have hosted multiple NFL matches, concerts and boxing events, boosting the clubs’ yearly income while improving a matchday experience for supporters.

Napoli will be well aware of the positive impacts that a new stadium can bring, as the Serie A champions reportedly looked into the idea of creating a new 65,000 seat stadium.

In September 2025, several Napoli representatives conducted a meeting with the Unified Economic Zone body (a group under the Italian Prime Minister’s Office) and City of Naples Municipal Authorities over the prospect.

After a lengthy discussion, the relevant parties found issues around moving over 300 families out of their homes, the plans for 8,000 parking spaces and a location clash with a new sports hall.

Furthermore, the future of Diego Armando Maradona proved to be a stumbling block, as Napoli are set to play in the iconic ground for at least five more years and could be renovated for the 2032 European Championships.

This initial meeting may have failed to accelerate plans, however, De Laurentiis is still pushing for a new home ground and our AI Supercomputer has predicted what this could look like.

What Would A New Napoli Stadium Look Like?

One of the common features in new soccer stadiums is the inclusion of glass around the ground, as it offers a sleek, modern look and allows supporters to obtain a deeper look behind the scenes.

Tottenham Hotspur included a glass cover over the tunnel, allowing supporters to see the players before making their way to the pitch.

Another key feature to a new home ground is an increased capacity and Napoli’s current ground holds 54,726 – something De Laurentiis wants to raise by at least 10-thousand.

This initial image follows the current trend with a glass roof, while also boasting four-tiers and boosting Napoli’s capacity hugely.

Any plans over a new ground will take a back-seat as Napoli are currently enduring a poor run of form and Antonio Conte could be sacked after a public scathing of his current roster.

The Italian manager questioned Napoli’s attitude and will-power in key matches this season, as the Scudetto holders have already lost five matches across all competitions.

De Laurentiis has re-assured supporters that Conte’s place in Naples is secure and the club can focus on performing in Serie A, while also continuing their push for a new home ground.

The overall cost of a new home ground is hard to predict at this current moment in time, but if Napoli want to replicate the image blow they will have to match the amount AC Milan and Inter Milan are committing to a new ground – just over €1.5 billion.

Gli Azzurri were initially willing to spend around €250m on their new home ground, but this was around the idea of renovating Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

If these plans change to creating a new ground completely, which was proposed in the meeting during September 2025, then Napoli will have to raise these funds hugely.

One feature that supporters are hoping to see in a new ground is honoring the iconic sky blue that has become renowned in Naples and this is clear to see in our AI Supercomputer’s prediction.

Do Napoli Own Stadio Diego Armando Maradona?

A major issue that has been prominent in Italy for multiple years now is the ownership of stadiums, as several Serie A sides cannot implement changes to their home ground.

AC Milan and Inter Milan’s decision to purchase the San Siro marked a huge moment, as the two sides have now joined Juventus, Sassuolo, Atalanta and Udinese as the only top-flight teams to have full-ownership over their stadium.

Napoli are yet to join this list as Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is currently owned by the city municipality in Naples, meaning the Serie A side must pay multiple fees throughout the season.

According to reports, Gli Azzurri pay the city municipality around €1 million in rent per year, while also covering staff payments and overall stadium maintenance.

De Laurentiis has been very vocal about his desire to acquire the stadium from the city municipality and this would be the first step to creating a brand new home ground.
