Claudio Marchisio Urges Juventus to Show Restraint in the Transfer Market and “Recognize” Their Level

Seven-time Scudetto winner with Juventus, Claudio Marchisio, has questioned his former club’s recent transfer policy.

After winning nine successive Serie A titles between 2011 and 2019, Juventus have since failed to finish higher than third.

Two Coppa Italia triumphs within that baron run have helped to satiate title-hungry Juve, but a club as demanding as this requires league and continental success.

Particularly in European competition – where they sit amongst the most successful teams of all time – they have struggled to assert themselves having failed to get past the last 16 since 2018-19.

It has prompted a period of sweeping change to try and find the winning formula, whether it be six managerial appointments in as many years – including two stints from Max Allegri – or the negative $640 million transfer net spend over the last 10 years.

Attempts to overhaul the squad have accelerated in recent years, which seemingly promoted desperate measures as they were banned from European competition in 2023/24, and fined for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

While Juventus have made a refreshing push to promote their brightest sparks in recent years – not least Kenan Yildiz and Andrea Cambiaso – they have made a habit out of letting them leave prematurely.

Dean Huijsen said he wanted to stay at Juventus before the board told him they needed to raise funds, and Matias Soule’s departure to direct rivals Roma was sanctioned in similar circumstances.

Both were former Juventus youth products, and their exits have been highly criticized by the fanbase who feel they were shifted on before they could really blossom in Turin.

Successful, high-profile, big-money signings have also been few and far between, with significant investments in Douglas Luiz  and Moise Kean among those to crash and burn in recent years.

Claudio Marchisio Questions Juventus Transfer Policy

Juve’s short-term adjustments year-on-year have shown their desperation to bring the title back to Turin, although it is becoming increasingly transparent that patience is a virtue.

The rhythm of recent seasons has scarcely been on key, with each squad overhaul or managerial change requiring a settling-in period that throws the project off course – and so the cycle repeats itself.

That is cause for concern for Claudio Marchisio, who has urged the club to show restraint in the transfer market.

“You can’t spend so much money every year,” he said.

He continued by suggesting Juventus must take stock of their current position as title outsiders, and recognize that a more stable path to success may be beneficial in the long run.

“You have to recognize your level and change little, not reshuffle everything,” he added.

“David, Openda, and Zhegrova? They don’t convince. David comes on and jogs. You’re at Juventus, in a difficult moment: you must give much more. Some players don’t understand what it means to wear the black and white shirt.”

The Bianconeri became the first team in Serie A to sack their manager this season, after Igor Tudor was dismissed in October and replaced with Luciano Spalletti.

Marchisio was also critical of Juve’s managerial merry-go-round.

“It’s been two or three years now that the team hasn’t been right. How many times in its history has Juve sacked the coach within the first few months of the season? And how many times has the managerial side been changed after the first year?”
