Speculation about Marek Hamsik’s return to Napoli alongside new coach Francesco Calzona has been put to rest as the former Partenopei star declined the proposal, citing personal reasons. Despite initial rumors suggesting a potential reunion, Hamsik clarified his stance during an interview with RTVS (via SOSFanta):
While Hamsik admitted that coaching Napoli would be a dream opportunity, he revealed that negotiations with the club did not materialize as expected. “Coaching Napoli is like a dream come true for him,” Hamsik expressed, explaining that the negotiations required approval from the Federation. Despite the excitement surrounding the prospect, Hamsik had already scheduled a trip to town for the Barcelona game, emphasizing that his decision was not influenced by the managerial situation.
Addressing the offer extended by Calzona, Hamsik disclosed, “Calzona reached out to me when this opportunity arose and wanted me to join him.” However, he affirmed his commitment to Slovakia, indicating that it wasn’t the right time for a return to Napoli. “It’s an enticing offer, as it’s my second home, and I’d like to go back one day. But it’s not the right time for that to happen,” Hamsik explained.
Calzona, in his introductory press conference, expressed his desire to have Hamsik on board but acknowledged the challenges posed by the former player’s commitments. “I strongly wanted him to come here,” Calzona stated, highlighting Hamsik’s significance in Napoli’s history. Despite the setback, Calzona maintained optimism about their collaboration, praising Hamsik’s contributions to the national team and affirming their continued collaboration.
