Inter Milan’s CEO Giuseppe Marotta has laid out the club’s lofty ambitions in a recent event promoting a book about Inter. Marotta touched on various topics, from the sense of belonging to the challenges of building a new stadium, and the club’s unwavering pursuit of success.
Explaining his choice of Antonio Conte as manager in the past, Marotta said, “I chose Conte because at that moment I was convinced the club needed him. But the choice of a manager is also appropriate to the moment you choose him. There are times when you need people who have firmness and authority, and others when the team is already well-oiled and you may need more of a manager.”
Marotta also discussed how the club has worked with players like Nicolò Barella to improve their on-field behavior. “We study not only the opponent but also the referee. In the past, Barella was lacking in his attitude towards match officials, but today he has improved a lot,” he explained.
On the stadium issue, Marotta emphasized its importance for fostering a sense of belonging among fans. “Having a stadium, your own home to live in and consume your passion, is important. It’s not just for one day a week, but for various activities throughout the week,” he stated. However, he lamented the bureaucratic hurdles in Italy that slow down such initiatives and drive away investors.
Marotta concluded with a bold statement about Inter’s ambitions: “A club like Inter, with its history, prestige, and trophy cabinet, can’t say it wants to win either the league or the Champions League – it must try to win everything. When I hear directors of important teams say that the important thing is to finish in the top four… No, the important thing is to win. If we don’t win, fine, it means our opponents were better. But the bar must always be high. Today we’re in the Champions League, so why not fight to win it? Why not fight in the league too? We shouldn’t be afraid, and that seems obvious to me.”
