AC Milan Show Interest in Free Agent Sergio Reguilon as They Scramble to Replace Theo Hernandez

Start

AC Milan transfer news had largely been dominated by Theo Hernandez’s anticipated move to Al Hilal, and although no announcement has been made up to this point, he is expected to join after the Club World Cup. With Milan already missing out on one of their chief targets at left-back, they have turned to the free agency market for replacements.

Is Theo Hernandez Leaving AC Milan?

Despite the delay in announcing the transfer, insiders have all but confirmed the departure of Theo Hernandez to Saudi champions Al Hilal.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has said the only thing holding up an official announcement is the fact Al Hilal remain in the Club World Cup, and as such, will wait until after their campaign to publicly reveal the Frenchman.

It comes after Hernandez initially rejected the move earlier this month, with his preference thought to be a sideways step elsewhere in Europe. However, Al Hilal’s generous personal terms and sizeable $35 million offer ultimately swung the deal in their favor.

AC Milan Miss Out On Honest Ahanor

With new sporting director Igli Tare setting in motion an aggressive rebuild in midfield, Milan will also now be forced into the market to fill the void at left-back.

The Rossoneri had identified Genoa’s teenage sensation Honest Ahanor as the ideal Theo Hernandez replacement, although Atalanta have this week beaten Milan to the 17-year-old’s signature.

Milan have also expressed interest in including 24-year-old Maxim De Cuyper in negations with Club Brugge, amid their separate pursuit of his teammate Ardon Jashari, whom they have submitted an improved bid for.

AC Milan Transfer News Sees Sergio Reguilon Emerge as Surprise Target

Max Allegri is keen to bolster the left-back position, and FootItalia understands Milan are open to the possibility of picking up two players who can compete for the position.

Milan are expected to generate $200 million in transfer income this summer, which has already been redirected to incomings such as Samuele Ricci.

They are, however, still keen not to over invest as the club continues to recover from a precarious financial position.

With that in mind, they are using the free agency market to great effect, with Real Madrid veteran Luka Modric already expected to join, while they are now showing interest in Sergio Reguilon.

The Spaniard has spent the past three seasons out on loan from parent club Tottenham, most recently landing at Brentford last season where he featured sporadically.

At 28, the six-cap Spain international still represents plenty of value and a wealth of experience, and with his contract running out in North London at the end of June, he would arrive on a free.

Allegri’s Milan are, according to new betting sites, still well behind Juventus, Napoli and Inter in next season’s Scudetto race.
