Will Matias Soule Play For Italy or Argentina?
Matias Soule has established himself as one of the brightest prospects in Europe during his time with Roma, becoming a first-team regular under Gian Piero Gasperini.
His performances have caught the eye of both Italy and Argentina, as Soule is eligible to play for either nation.
The young Roma star was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, but his ancestry can be traced back to Italy – which is common for multiple Argentine residents following migration from Italians in the 19th/20th centuries.
Soule has made his decision about international representation and has committed to the Argentinian national team despite contact with the Italian Football Federation.
The 22-year-old’s first taste of Italian soccer came in October 2020, as Soule joined the Juventus academy after impressing in Argentina.
After playing for the Bianconeri various youth sides, Soule made his Serie A debut in November 2021 at just 18-years-old.
After making just 21 appearances for the Juventus senior side, the youngster decided to leave Turin and join Frosinone on loan for the 2023/24 season.
Soule managed to impress during his time with Frosinone, contributing to 14 goals in 39 appearances (11G + 3A) and earned a move to Roma in July 2024.
The Argentine has been one of the standout players in Serie A this season, contributing to five goals in six league appearances (3G +2A).
Some Roma fans expected the youngster to be pushed out of the side after the Giallorossi signed Leon Bailey, however, the Jamaican’s injury problems have allowed Soule to cement a place in the starting lineup.
These performances have come at the right time for Soule, as the 2026 World Cup is right around the corner and the Roma star is yet to stake a claim in the Argentina side.
Has Matias Soule Got An International Cap?
Despite becoming a regular starter in Serie A, Matias Soule is yet to make an appearance for the Argentina first team – only representing the nation at youth level.
Soule represented Argentina at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2023, as the South American nation was eliminated from the Ro16 by Nigeria.
Overall, the Roma forward has made 13 appearances for a variety of age groups, playing for the U-16 side three times, U-21’s on two occasions and U-20 team eight times.
Argentina are spoiled in terms of talent, with the likes of Santiago Lencina bursting onto the scene and the River Plate star has attracted interest from Serie A.
This level of talent has stopped Soule from earning a cap for the current World Cup holders and the Roma player is facing a race against time to earn a place at next year’s competition.
