Defeats Against Inter Milan and Roma Show Como Aren’t Quite Title Contenders Yet

In the history of Serie A, no newly promoted side has won the league on the first attempt, yet Como showed glimpses of a team who could in the very near future last season. The reason is simple; they have a strong and diverse pool of talented Spanish players, led by Nico Paz and orchestrated by Cesc Fabregas.

After fifteen Serie A matches, Como still top the stats as the best team at keeping ball possession.

According to Opta, they are leading with an average possession rate of 60.82%, followed by Inter Milan (59.45%) and AS Roma (58.03%).

No surprises given Fabregas’s career as a player was built around this fundamental principle, and the reason is very simple: the more one team has the ball, the fewer chances the opponents will have to score.

But when it comes to finishing this pretty good amount of possession, problems arise for the Lake Siders. In fact, Como is in ninth place when it comes to expected goals (18.95 expected goals vs. 19 goals scored).

They just need to make more. Even crisis-ridden bottom of the league Fiorentina have created more chances to score than Fabregas’ team (20.46 xG vs. 12 goals scored).

Two Straight Losses Leaves Como Adrift

Como definitely deserve their current position in the league table. The Lakesiders lost to Inter Milan a week ago and to Roma yesterday. This means that they will now have to settle for a place in the European Cup next season.

They might be in the Europa League, and they’re definitely likely to get a spot in the Europa Conference League. It’s going to be really hard for them to be in the top four for the Champions League, or maybe the top five if Italy’s ranking improves.

While it is true that Inter Milan thrashed Como 4-0 on matchday 14, it is also true that they had a very tough game against Roma in their last Serie A fixture. Those two games showed that Como are better than most Serie A sides, but are not quite title contenders.

Against Roma, they seemed nervous, especially in the second half when they racked up four yellow cards, including one for Fabregas from the bench.

Como played better than they did against Inter, but the score against Roma is a fair reflection of the game. Roma just had enough to win the game. Como didn’t.
