Fiorentina given suspended sentence for racist abuse

Fiorentina have been handed a partial stadium ban after fans racially abused Juventus players Weston McKennie, Moise Kean and Dusan Vlahovic. La Viola’s famous Curva Fiesole decided to boycott the game following calls to suspend the match in the wake of devastating flooding in the Tuscany region.

The game was deemed safe enough to take place, but a large portion of Fiorentina fans were heard chanting racial abuse Vlahovic, before, during and after the match

The report from match officials also noted that Kean and McKennie were subject to racial abuse in the build up before kick-off, however the sporting judges have deemed to hand out a partial ban for the Curva Fiesole section. The ban, is in fact, a suspended sentence, meaning it will be activated only if further incidents occur  over the course of the next year:

CURVA FIESOLE CLOSED ONE DAY (PENALTY SUSPENDED)

A day’s closure for the Curva Fiesole, but with a suspended penalty: this is the sanction decreed by Judge Gerardo Mastrandrea for what happened on Sunday evening at the ‘Franchi’.

The sporting judge resolves to sanction Fiorentina with the obligation to play a match with the sector actually occupied, in the match in question, of the ‘Curva Fiesole’ devoid of spectators”.

“Penalty suspended for the period of one year in accordance with Article 28 paragraph 7 CGS with the warning that, if during this period a similar violation is committed, the suspension will be revoked and the penalty will be added to that imposed for the new violation”.
