A standout Fiorentina pre-season fixture will see goalkeeper David de Gea return to Man United in August.

De Gea spent the bulk of his career at Old Trafford. Many Red Devils supporters consider the Spaniard as one of the club’s finest ever goalkeepers.

During his 12 years with United, De Gea made 545 appearances in all competitions and kept 190 clean sheets. He was part of the side who won the last ever English Premier League title under legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 34-year-old shot-stopper also won the FA Cup on two occasions as well as the Europa League under the guidance of Jose Mourinho in 2017.

Fiorentina Pre-Season Fixture Vs Man United

On Tuesday, Man United announced they would be taking on Serie A side Fiorentina in a pre-season fixture at Old Trafford. The game will take place on 9 August and starts at 1:45pm CET (7:45am ET).

De Gea’s return will be the big talking point in what is likely to be a sell out. Many supporters will be keen to get a glimpse of the current Viola star who has enjoyed a terrific maiden campaign at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Even the best offshore sportsbooks indicate that De Gea’s influence can help mount a charge for a European soccer place in 2026-27.

The Viola will once again play in the Conference League (qualifying stage). The Serie A side reached the semi-final last season and also finished as runners-up in the competition in 2023 and 2024.

David De Gea Fiorentina Stats

In April, Fiorentina were set to activate a one-year contract extension for David de Gea. However, the Spaniard penned a new three-year deal on 1 June.

Much of the reasoning behind continuing with De Gea is his stats. The 34-year-old kept an impressive 11 clean sheets out of 42 appearances across all competitions.

In October 2024, De Gea starred after saving TWO penalties in the 2-1 victory over Milan at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. His first came from Theo Hernandez before he went on to deny Tammy Abraham.

Why Did David De Gea Leave Man United?

The reason why David de Gea left Man United was due to the expiration of his contract. His deal ran out in July 2023 and new terms were unable to be agreed.

De Gea’s last game for United came in the 2023 FA Cup final defeat to Man City at Wembley. His last outing at Old Trafford came against Fulham in May whereby the Red Devils won 2-1 in the English Premier League.

Although supporters were keen for De Gea to stay, they couldn’t begrudge him of seeking a new venture after 12 years with the club.

Interestingly, the date of the friendly game (9 August) is the exact same day in 2024 that De Gea joined Fiorentina.
