Gary Neville has faced criticism over his treatment towards Scott McTominay during the Napoli star’s time in the Premier League.
Gary Neville Questioned Over Scott McTominay Treatment
The Sky Sports pundit recently questioned Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay in the 2024 summer transfer window, as the Scottish international continues to perform in Naples.
During a behind the scenes video for the Stick To Football Podcast, Neville was accused of ‘killing’ the Scotsman during his time with the Red Devils.
Neville asked: “What’s happened to Scott McTominay? Have we made a massive mistake?”
To which Neville’s Sky Sports pundit partner, Jamie Carragher, replied: “You’ve killed another Man United player, that’s what happened. Too much criticism, [saying] he’s not good enough.”
This comes after McTominay’s superb run in Italy, winning the Scudetto in his debut season with 12 goals, winning the 2024/25 MVP Award and scoring a superb overhead kick against Denmark to secure a place in the 2026 World Cup.
However during his time with Manchester United, McTominay faced heavy criticism from fans and pundits, including Gary Neville who repeatedly questioned whether the 28-year-old was good enough.
Neville has been fairly critical of Manchester United players since becoming a Sky Sports pundit, most recently directing his criticism towards Joshua Zirkzee.
The Dutchman has failed to impress in Manchester, causing Zirkzee to be linked with a move from Old Trafford and Gian Piero Gasperini has targeted the Premier League talisman for Roma.
Zirkzee will be looking to make a similar impact to his former Manchester United teammate, Scott McTominay, as the Napoli star recently picked up another award in Serie A.

Scott McTominay Crowned Best Serie A Player
Scott McTominay was recognised for his 2024/25 display once again during the Gran Gala del Calcia awards ceremony on December 1st, as the Napoli star was named Serie A Player of the Year.
This award has been picked-up by some of the biggest names in Serie A history, including Zinedine Zidane, Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Andrea Pirlo.
Napoli conducted a clean sweep at the Gran Gala del Calcia awards, as the Partenopei were crowned the Club of the Year and Antonio Conte secured the Coach of the Year.
McTominay beat some huge names to the title, including Lautaro Martinez who recently dropped a bombshell on his Inter Milan future and Moise Kean after the Italian’s 19 league goals last season.
The Scotsman has made a slower start to this season in comparison to his debut campaign, as the 28-year-old has contributed to four goals in 12 Serie A appearances.
Napoli have struggled to meet their standards from the 2024/25 title run, already losing five matches across all competitions and dropping down to second in Serie A.
