Gian Piero Gasperini Targets Premier League Talisman After Roma’s Toothless Display Against Napoli

Roma are looking to bring in a Premier League duo during the January window as the Giallorossi’s struggles in front of goal reached a new low against Napoli.

Gasperini’s Concerns In Attack Continue

The Giallorossi dropped down to fourth in Serie A after a 1-0 defeat by champions Napoli at Stadio Olimpico, as David Neres secured the deciding effort for the Partenopei.

Although defeat was the biggest concern for Gasperini, the Roma manager will also be disappointed with his side’s attacking display – registering just two shots on target.

This was Roma’s lowest tally in over eight-months, as the Giallorossi earned a 1-0 victory over Cagliari back in March and highlighted the club’s issues in front of goal.

Gasperini’s men sit ninth in the Serie A goal-scoring rankings, as Roma have scored 15 goals in 13 matches which is 13 less than Inter Milan.

Evan Ferguson was brought in on loan during the summer window to act as competition for Artem Dovbyk, however, both players have failed to perform this season.

The Irish striker was substituted at half-time against Napoli and the Giallorossi are unlikely to bring the Brighton star in on a permanent basis.

Prior to Ferguson’s arrival, Roma were close to signing Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus, but the two clubs were unable to reach an agreement over a transfer fee.

The Giallorossi may look to sign the Serbian in January, as Vlahovic’s future with Juventus has been cast into doubt after a recent injury against Cagliari.

However, the 25-year-old’s salary could prove to be an issue for Roma and Gasperini is now looking towards alternative options – showing heavy interest in two Premier League stars.

Roma Target Premier League Duo

Roma’s desire for a new talisman has seen a host of star names be linked with a move to the Italian capital and Manchester United star Joshua Zirkzee is a leading option for Gasperini.

The Dutch international has struggled to perform in England, falling out-of-favor under Ruben Amorim and is now considering a January departure.

However, Zirkzee has picked-up consecutive starts during Benjamin Sesko’s absence, as the Dutchman was back on the score sheet in United’s latest Premier League outing against Crystal Palace.

The Giallorossi have also been linked with AC Milan star Santiago Gimenez, but face stiff competition as the Mexican has attracted Premier League interest.

Gasperini has added another name to the list if Roma miss out on Zirkzee and Gimenez, as the Roma boss is a huge admirer of another Premier League – Mathys Tel.

The Frenchman joined Spurs permanently in the summer after spending the 2024/25 season on loan in North London and Tel is yet to cement a place in the starting eleven under Thomas Frank.

Tottenham are willing to let their summer signing leave on loan in the January window and Roma are hoping to tempt the 20-year-old to Serie A.
