Gian Piero Gasperini is widely considered as one of the finest Serie A head coaches and his start at Roma this season reaffirms that theory.

Gasperini is on the verge of taking the Giallorossi from regular European challengers to genuine Scudetto-chasers. Something of which has eluded I Lupi for a quarter of a century.

With Gasperini at the wheel, the sky really is the limit. His brilliant work at Atalanta did not go unnoticed and boosted his profile across Europe. Now, the 67-year-old is on the right trajectory to claim a first ever league title.

Gian Piero Gasperini Roma Stats

Since replacing Claudio Ranieri in the summer, Gian Pieri Gasperini has carried on the fine work of the legendary Italian boss.

Ranieri toyed with the idea of remaining in the dugout but was happy to move aside so Gasperini could have his shot. And so far, the former Atalanta boss hasn’t endured too many misses.

As far as the Serie A transfers went in the off-season, Roma were one of the highest spenders although Gasperini did preach more outlay was needed to challenge for the title.

However, his craft and wizardry have started to pay dividends with the Giallorossi firmly locked in the title battle. Granted only a quarter of the season has been played but Gasperini’s boys are looking like worthy contenders.

As it stands, I Lupi has won seven of their ten league matches and lost the remaining three. Gasperini is averaging 2.10 points per match in Italy’s elite.

In the Europa League, Roma have won two and lost two of their four games. Naturally, that gives the Giallorossi 1.50 PPG in Europe’s secondary club competition.

In terms of the domestic standings, only Napoli and the two Milan clubs sit above Gasperini. Just a single point separates the teams with I Lupi currently perched in fourth.

Can Roma Win Serie A In 2025-26?

This season, Roma has one of their greatest chances to win Serie A for the first time since 2000-01. Since that historical title win, the Giallorossi has finished as runners-up on nine occasions with their last coming in 2016-17.

However, what can Gian Piero Gasperini offer that his predecessors couldn’t? His stunning nine-year spell with Atalanta demonstrated he can mix it with the very best. And on a limited budget, too.

Gasperini has a brilliant habit of unearthing relative unknowns and turning them into stars. Ademola Lookman and Mateo Retegui are two recent examples.

At the Stadio Olimpico, he is certainly getting the best out of Argentina’s Matias Soule. The 22-year-old struggled in his first season but has flourished so far in this campaign.

Even the likes of Gianluca Mancini, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Bryan Cristante are all performing extremely well under the stewardship of Gasperini. The former worked under the 67-year-old in Bergamo and their reunion has been seamless.

Furthermore, Gasperini is very astute at getting the best out of what he has got. Paulo Dybala and Artem Dovbyk have performed admirably so far and the former La Dea boss is crystal clear in how he wants his players to operate.

Therefore, if Roma are able to keep up their momentum, stay neck-and-neck with their rivals and add sensibly in January, there is no reason why Gasperini can’t earn legendary status by guiding the Giallorossi to the Scudetto.

Gian Piero Gasperini Turned Atalanta Into One Of Italy’s Most Competitive Clubs

There are a number of interesting stats from Gian Piero Gasperini’s time at Atalanta that can certainly bode well for Roma. On a personal level, Gasperini became just the fourth Serie A manager to accumulate over 900 points.

That extraordinary feat was achieved in October 2024. He has added a further 85 since then and is closing in on the 1,000 mark. Another incredible achievement that highlights his winning mentality.

Not only that, it demonstrates his loyalty to the Italian game and even more so to La Dea. Numerous times Gasperini was pursued during his eight seasons in charge before finally submitting to the Roma project this year.

During his time in Bergamo, Gasperini secured European soccer in six seasons. Meaning he finished in the top five 80% of time he was in the dugout. Another astonishing achievement.

He also saw his Atalanta stars net a record number of goals in the 2019-20 season. A total of 98 was achieved whereby the club would go onto finish third.

In terms of his style of play, Gasperini typically deploys a 3-4-2-1 attacking system which has evidently worked very well at La Dea. He also employs this system at Roma which is so far, coming to fruition.

What Trophies And Accolades Has Gian Piero Gasperini Won?

Granted, Gian Piero Gasperini is yet to lift a Scudetto during his managerial career but he certainly has the tactical savvy to achieve his aim.

You only have to go back to the 2023-24 season to locate his finest accolade as head coach. Gasperini was the first manager to win a major European honor with Atalanta.

He did so in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen. The German giants were unbeaten the whole season and were on course to win the treble. That was until the wily old boss had other ideas.

A sensational Ademola Lookman hat-trick downed the Bundesliga side 3-0 and catapulted Gasperini’s profile and reputation into the stratosphere.

That is his greatest and only major honor to date but Gasperini has been the recipient of a number of personal awards. On two occasions, he was named as the Serie A Coach of the Year (2019, 2020).

Gasperini also won the Gazzetta Sports Awards in 2017 and has won four Serie A Coach of the Month awards. His most recent came in October 2025.

Roma’s Major Honors And Scudetto Wins

With the latest Joshua Zirkzee transfer news highlighting Roma as a potential January destination, its such signings that could help the Giallorossi achieve Serie A glory.

As earlier stated, I Lupi haven’t won the Scudetto since 2000-01. Overall, the Roman giants have won Italy’s elite soccer division on three occasions. They have finished as runners-up 14 times.

In terms of the Coppa Italia, Roma has tasted success no fewer than nine times. The last victory came back in the 2007-08 season when Luciano Spalletti was at the helm. Two Supercoppa Italiana’s have been won, too.

On the continent, the Giallorossi won the first-ever Conference League under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho in 2021-22. The legendary Portuguese boss also finished as a Europa League runner-up a season later.

The only other success was the 1960-61 Inter-Cities Fair Cup. From Gian Piero Gasperini’s perspective, he has all the incentive needed to write himself into Roma folklore.

Roma’s major honors

  • 🏆 🇮🇹 – Serie A (3)
  • 🏆 🇮🇹 – Coppa Italia (9)
  • 🏆 🇮🇹 – Supercoppa Italiana (2)
  • 🏆 🌍 – Conference League (1)
  • 🏆 🌍 – Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (1)

What Does The Future Hold For Gian Piero Gasperini?

Naturally, the immediate future for Gian Piero Gasperini is to win the 2025-26 Serie A title. He could become just the fourth Roma boss to achieve said aim.

Gasperini is certainly primed for an assault on the title and has the winning mentality to go all the way. Even if he doesn’t have the actual experience of being crowned a league champion.

The Atalanta legend will be desperate to end his career with a bang. After all, Gasperini is 67 and he and Roma know they probably won’t work in unison for too many seasons.

That is why this term provides the perfect opportunity for Gasperini to land the title. Statistically, he is very much on course to potentially achieve success but he knows how vital it will be to beat the Giallorossi’s league rivals along the way.
