Giorgio Scalvini – Newcastle Transfer Bid Rejected

Atalanta Reject Bid From Newcastle United for Giorgio Scalvini Amid Summer Transfer Interest

Start

Atalanta have made their stance crystal clear: Giorgio Scalvini is not for sale — at least for now. Newcastle United have seen their initial approach for the 21-year-old Italian center-back firmly rejected, with the Bergamo-based club placing a much higher value on one of their most promising homegrown stars.

Newcastle Target Scalvini as Defensive Reinforcement

The Magpies are in the market for a new central defender after missing out on several targets. Real Madrid snapped up Dean Huijsen, Illia Zabarnyi looks PSG-bound, and Marc Guehi seems likely to join Liverpool.

That has turned Newcastle’s focus toward Giorgio Scalvini. The English club reportedly submitted a bid between €40 and €50 million, but Atalanta swiftly declined, according to TuttoAtalanta. The Serie A outfit considers Scalvini “untouchable” and has plans to build their 2025–26 team around him.

Will Atalanta Sell Scalvini to Newcastle?

Scalvini, who made his 100th appearance for Atalanta earlier this year, has long been viewed as one of Italy’s most exciting defensive prospects. Despite a difficult 2024–25 season marred by an ACL injury and a later shoulder issue, Atalanta remains committed to keeping him.

With a contract running until 2028, the club has leverage — and they’re using it. New head coach Ivan Juric reportedly views Scalvini as a pillar of his long-term project. Only goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi is currently seen as a realistic sale this summer, while Gianluca Scamacca is also being taken off the market despite interest from Roma.

Could Scalvini Leave in January?

While Atalanta are holding firm now, a winter transfer window move hasn’t been ruled out. Newcastle, Inter, and Juventus remain interested but are wary of Scalvini’s recent injury history.

Sources close to the Magpies have suggested that January could be a more strategic time to move, giving clubs a chance to assess his fitness. For Newcastle, who have reportedly closely scouted Scalvini for two years, the question remains whether to gamble now or wait until his value is clearer.

What Makes Scalvini So Good

Standing at 6’4” and comfortable in both a back-three or defensive midfield role, Scalvini has been compared to Alessandro Bastoni. His ball-carrying ability and comfort under pressure make him more than just a stopper.

In the 2023–24 season, he ranked in the 96th percentile among Serie A center backs for interceptions per 90 (2.09) and the 95th for successful take-ons (0.53), showcasing his proactive style. Right-footed, dominant in the air, and technically gifted, Scalvini offers a modern blend of defensive solidity and progressive play.

Newcastle Also Interested in Atalanta Midfielder Ederson

Scalvini isn’t the only Atalanta player drawing attention from St James’ Park. Newcastle are also reportedly monitoring Brazilian midfielder Ederson, especially with Joelinton being linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

The Magpies have been scouting both players for a while and may turn their attention to Ederson if Scalvini remains off-limits.

Their previous success in the Italian market — most notably the £55 million signing of Sandro Tonali — has encouraged Newcastle to continue exploring Serie A for top talent.

For now, Atalanta are closing the door on a summer exit for Scalvini. But the situation could evolve quickly depending on the player’s form, fitness, and external pressure.

Given the defender’s contract, skillset, and age, he remains one of the most valuable young assets in Italian football. The coming months will be key in determining whether he stays in Bergamo or takes the next step in his career abroad.
