After spending over 70-years in a ground-share agreement with local rivals, Roma, Lazio are on the verge of acquiring a new home stadium in the Flaminio region.

The Laziali are often regarded below Roma in the Italian soccer pecking-order and having to play in the same stadium as their rivals has caused the club to lack a unique identity.

Competing with the Giallorossi has been a difficult task in recent seasons, as shown by Roma’s recent links with Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is currently one of the best strikers in the Premier League.

However, this could be set to change in the coming years as the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, granted Lazio’s request to obtain a 99-year surface right concession over Stadio Flaminio.

Claudio Lotitio, who is the president at Lazio, is keen on bringing a new lease of life to the Biancocelesti and has prioritized a move to a new ground.

Coming to an agreement with the Mayor of Rome is a huge step for Lazio, but the Italian side will need to remain patient as there are many stages to completing a full purchase.

Lazio are still finalizing their plans over a new ground and once completed, the club will need to get their proposal approved by the municipality of Rome – meaning this process could run for multiple years.

Earning acceptance from the City Council will not be an easy task for Lazio, as Roma Nuoto saw their plans for a multi-sport facility be rejected in April of this year.

Lazio Will Make Huge Changes To Stadio Flaminio

Stadio Flaminio was the home ground for Roma and Lazio during the 1989/90 season, as Stadio Olimpico underwent key renovations and updates for the 1990 World Cup.

The ground has been abandoned for several years now, with the most occupants being the Italian rugby team, who hosted matches at the ground between 2000-2011.

However, Lazio’s ambitions would bring huge investment to the iconic sports stadium and these plans were first proposed in 2021, as Lotito looked to purchase the ground and increase the 24,973 capacity to 40,000

Since then, the Lazio president has gone a step further and pushed to raise the seating to 50,570 while also investing into the Flaminio district as a whole.

This would see the club invest around €440 million, adding a retracting roof to the stadium but making sure that the historic Nervi structure is still intact.

However, these plans took a major hit during the summer transfer window as the Laziali were banned from signing any players after breaching a variety of financial parameters.

Failing to bring in any new players has affected the clubs’ performances, causing players like Mateo Guendozui to consider a move to Napoli and also left fans questioning the Laziali’s financial situation.

Lazio will be able to bring in some fresh faces in January and this could also progress plans over the Stadio Flaminio acquisition as the club’s financial circumstances begin to balance out.
