Roma Ready To Launch Transfer Bid For ‘Serie A Fan’ Jean-Philippe Mateta

Roma are ready to join the race for unsettled Crystal Palace striker and ‘Serie A fan’ Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The France international is failing to commit his long term future to the Eagles and the Giallorossi are strongly monitoring his contract situation.

Mateta’s current deal concludes at the end of the 2026-27 campaign and it looks increasingly likely he’ll leave Selhurst Park in the not-so-distant future.

Roma Interested In Jean-Philippe Mateta

Roma’s goalscoring dilemma has been one of few blemishes so far this season but they are set to test Crystal Palace’s resolve.

After 12 matchdays, the Giallorossi are top of the standings but there are doubts about offering a new contract to Paulo Dybala owing to his high salary expectations.

Although things are going swimmingly on the pitch, head coach Gian Piero Gasperini knows the importance of adding a striker of Mateta’s caliber to his roster.

Especially as Evan Ferguson and Artem Dovbyk have struggled so far in 2025-26. The former actually scored his first goal for the Italians against Cremonese but it is understood his loan could still be cut short.

With the above in mind, there will be plenty of opportunities for Mateta to flourish in the capital. He is a keen admirer of Italy’s top-flight and would strongly consider any potential Roma offer.

Gasperini isn’t blessed with a huge war chest but the longer Mateta’s contract stalemate ensues, the Italians will have a great chance to snare the Frenchman for a discounted fee.

What Can Mateta Bring To Roma?

Not only will Jean-Philippe Mateta bring goals to Roma, he offers versatility which Gian Piero Gasperini craves. Mateta has played in a number of attacking positions at Crystal Palace and his adaptability has proven pivotal.

Mateta will also have a solid understanding of the Italian game. He has been a huge admirer of the league for a number of years and often follows the big teams.

His knowledge will prove paramount and should minimize the settling period. Something of which new signings often require before they hit the ground running.

In terms of his attributes, Mateta has plenty of qualities he would bring to the Stadio Olimpico. Not only is the 28-year-old a strong and imposing forward, he has great movement and anticipation.

Furthermore, Mateta is renowned for his link up-play and he would seamlessly slot into Gasperini’s style of play. In fact, it’s likely the Italian would build his attack and midfield around the France international.

Will Champions League Qualification Prove Decisive?

Naturally, Jean-Philippe Mateta wants to play in the best competitions that soccer has to offer. Roma are very much on course for a Champions League finish as a bare minimum this term.

In fact, the Giallorossi are perfectly poised to challenge outright for the Scudetto. Something of which they haven’t won since the 2000-01 campaign.

If they can achieve at least a top-four finish, that will dramatically improve their chances of luring Mateta to the Stadio Olimpico. Especially as the 28-year-old is very much in-demand.

There are a number of interested parties in Mateta which include the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United. Closer to home, AC Milan are also monitoring Mateta as they also need an out-and-out goalscorer. 

With the Crystal Palace star unlikely to pen new terms in London, Mateta could realize his Serie A dream with a move to Roma in the summer. However, Gasperini must ensure he can offer UCL soccer to help fend off rival bidders.
