Will Federico Chiesa Leave Liverpool?

After failing to make a major impact in the Premier League, Federico Chiesa is now eyeing-up a return to Serie A and has attracted interest from a host of Italian sides.

The Azzurri international joined Liverpool in August 2024 as the only summer signing in Arne Slot’s debut season and the Reds went on to win the Premier League title.

However, Chiesa’s impact on the Liverpool side was rather insignificant, as the former Juventus star made just 14 appearances across all competitions – accumulating a measly 104 minutes in the Premier League.

Many expected the 28-year-old to complete a move away in the recent summer transfer window, but Liverpool decided to keep a hold of the Italian after Luis Diaz’s move to Bayern Munich.

Arne Slot added Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak to his attacking roster, meaning Chiesa dropped further down the pecking order and is yet to start in the league this season.

The Italian has managed to contributed to three league goals from nine substitute appearances (2G + 1A) and some supporters have called for Chiesa to be pushed into the starting eleven.

Despite this backing from Liverpool supporters, Chiesa is yet to earn a place in the Liverpool side and the 28-year-old is now looking for a move elsewhere in January.

Playing time will be valuable for Chiesa in 2026, as the Liverpool star is looking to earn a place in Italy’s 2026 World Cup squad (provided Italy qualify) and playing in Serie A could catch the attention of Azzurri manager, Gennaro Gattuso.

Which Serie A Side Should Sign Federico Chiesa?

Juventus

The Bianconeri have endured a whirlwind start to the 2025/26 season, which saw Igor Tudor lose his place as Juventus manager following a run of poor results.

Juventus’ performances have been underwhelming across all competitions, sitting sixth in Serie A and the Bianconeri have made a winless start to their Champions League campaign.

Bringing in Federico Chiesa could be a shrewd piece of business for Juventus, as Chiesa has a rich history in Turin after making 131 appearances for the Serie A side.

Chiesa joined Juventus for €44.6 million in July 2022 after a successful loan spell and the Italian went on to win two Coppa Italia titles and one Supercoppa Italiana title.

The 28-year-old contributed to 56 goals during his time in Turin (32G + 24A), but his spell was heavily impacted by injuries, suffering a major ACL tear in 2021/22.

Luciano Spalletti has history with Chiesa after their time together with the Italian national team and the Liverpool star is said to be keen on returning to Turin.

Roma 

Juventus may be Chiesa’s preferred option, however, Roma could be in the market for a fresh attacking option in January as the Giallorossi have scored just 10 Serie A goals this season.

Gian Piero Gasperini has managed to guide Roma to fourth in the table, but the veteran manager has failed to get the best out of the likes of Evan Ferguson, Leon Bailey and Artem Dovbyk.

Leon Bailey has endured a terrible start to his Roma career and the Jamaican’s loan deal could be cut short after suffering another injury.

These issues in front of goal will force the Giallorossi into the market for an attacking option during the January window and Chiesa would be available on a temporary or permanent basis.

Chiesa’s contract with Liverpool does not expire until June 2028, but the Reds only signed the Italian for €12m – meaning he could be available for under €10m in January.

AC Milan

Massimiliano Allegri has enjoyed a strong start to his second-spell as AC Milan manager, as the Rossoneri sit third in Serie A and have already beaten current champions, Napoli.

However, Christian Pulisic has attracted interest from the MLS and the USMNT has been one of Milan’s star players this season alongside Rafael Leao.

If Pulisic does push for a move away instead of agreeing a new deal, then Milan may be keen on finding a replacement in January to prepare for the end of this season – while also preparing for the 2026/27 campaign.

Allegri’s preferred formation may be a slight issue for Chiesa as the Italian manager does not player with conventional wingers and has used Rafael Leao as a second striker.

Although Leao is playing in a somewhat unfamiliar position, the Portuguese international has still registered five goal contributions in seven appearances (4G + 1A) – which could be a blueprint for Chiesa.

Como

Cesc Fabregas was heavily supported during the recent transfer window, bringing in 19 fresh faces and spending over €100m on some huge names across Europe.

Como currently sit seventh in Serie A and have lost just one league game all season, but five of their 10 league encounters have ended in a stalemate.

Lacking the ability to find a winning goal could push Fabregas into signing a new attacking option in January and Chiesa would be a strong addition due to his experience in Serie A.

Unlike Allegri, Fabregas does play with traditional wingers and Chiesa would be an instant fit into Como’s 4-2-3-1 system, which could make for a seamless transition.

Bologna

Our final suggestion for which Serie A side should sign Federico Chiesa is high-flying Bologna, as Vincenzo Italiano will be looking to maintain a spot in the top five.

The Rossoblu are unbeaten in their last eight matches across all competitions and are the second-highest scorers in Serie A alongside Napoli with 16.

Italiano tends to play with wide-men and could be on the hunt for a new left-winger as Jonathan Rowe is yet to score a league goal after signing from Marseille in the summer.

Chiesa’s previous experience with Juventus and Fiorentina would put him in good stead for a move back to Serie A, which will be key for Bologna when they enter the latter stages of the season.
