Lorenzo Insigne Wants Surprise Italy World Cup Recall Despite Not Having A Club
The 34-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Toronto FC in July.
Former Italy international Lorenzo Insigne is targeting a surprise Azzurri recall ahead of the World Cup.

The forward has been without a club after his contract at Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC was terminated in July 2025.
Insigne headed to Canada after deciding to leave Napoli, his boyhood side, in July 2022. He made 217 goal contributions in 434 appearances and remains one of the best players in the Partenopei’s glittering history.
However, his career has somewhat stalled, and the search is on for a new challenge. Insigne would be open to returning to Serie A, and he could reunite with his former boss Maurizio Sarri at Lazio, who have officially made contact. As reported by FootItalia, Fiorentina are also keen on Insigne.
Providing an update recently, he told Sky: “I’m training and I hope something exciting comes along soon.
“You journalists know more than I do now. I’m finding out news that even I don’t know yet. The transfer market is simple: I’m calm and I’m waiting.”
He has not yet given up hope of a shock Azzurri comeback, either, and has made no secret of his World Cup ambitions. His last Italy appearance was in 2022, and he has been awarded 54 caps, scoring 10 goals.
“The desire is there, but first I have to return to a club and then think about the national team,” Insigne said. “The coach knows my thoughts.
“I repeat: I feel good, I train on the pitch and in the gym, hoping that something will come along that satisfies me and allows me to return.”
Insigne was, of course, part of the squad that won the European Championship in 2021. He started the thrilling final against England and played 91 minutes before watching on as the Azzurri triumphed in a penalty shootout.
Lazio Interested in Lorenzo Insigne
An olive branch appears to have been extended in the form of Lazio.
Speaking on Radio Kiss Kiss, his agent, Andrea D’Amico, publicly revealed the Biancocelesti were interested in the veteran winger, with talks having taken place over a period of several months.
He even hinted last month that an agreement was close.
Insigne certainly still has plenty to offer. He spent 12 years at Napoli, scoring 122 goals and providing 95 assists. His move to Toronto somewhat backfired, but the wideman still made 76 appearances in total and netted 19 times.
