Is Lorenzo Insigne Returning To Serie A? Fiorentina Ready To Battle Lazio Over Italian’s Signature

Lorenzo Insigne has been without a club since July of this year and the Italian star is reportedly weighing-up multiple options for a return to Serie A.
Will Lorenzo Insigne Make Serie A Return?
The 34-year-old is looking to make a major return to the sport of soccer, after his time with Major League Soccer side, Toronto FC, came to an end in July 2025.
Insigne decided to leave his boyhood club Napoli in July 2022, after registering 217 goal contributions in 434 appearances (122G + 95A) and cementing his place as one of the best players in the Partenopei’s history.
One key factor in Insigne’s decision to leave Naples and join Toronto was the financial upside in Canada, as the Italian signed the largest contract in MLS history – earning $16 million per year.
Not only is this amount higher than any in MLS history, it’s also more than multiple players earn in Europe’s elite leagues and puts Christian Pulisic’s salary request with AC Milan into perspective.
However, his performances in North America were not up to the standards that were expected, as Insigne scored just 19 goals in 76 appearances for Toronto.
This left the MLS side with no choice but to terminate the Italian’s deal in July and the 34-year-old has spent multiple months away from the sport.
Taking a break appears to have reignited a flame in Insigne’s career, as the former Napoli star is reportedly pushing for a return to Italy’s top-flight in 2026.
Negotiations over a move back to Serie A are said to be well underway and the 34-year-old has caught huge interest from both Lazio, and Fiorentina.
Who Will Sign Lorenzo Insigne?
Lazio were heavily linked with Insigne during the opening stages of the summer transfer window following his abrupt exit from Toronto FC – but multiple outside factors put a stop to the move.
The Laziali were handed a transfer ban for failing to adhere to multiple financial parameters, meaning the Rome-based side were unable to sign any players during the summer window.
However, this embargo will come to an end in January 2026 and Maurizio Sarri is reportedly looking to make some major additions to his side after a mixed start to the season.
Lazio sit ninth in the table with 15 points from 11 matches and do not boast any European soccer after finishing seventh in Serie A last season.
Signing Insigne appeared to be a fairly simple task for Lazio, however, the Laziali will face a slight issue in negotiations as Fiorentina are reportedly interested in signing the 34-year-old.
La Viola have endured a miserable start to the 2024/25 campaign, sitting bottom of Serie A and remaining winless from 11 matches in Italy’s top division.
Stefano Pioli was relieved of his duties following this run of poor results and Paolo Vanoli has been appointed on a short-term deal to help rescue the remainder of this season.
Vanoli is expected to receive minimal backing during the January window, as his future with the club is uncertain and the Italian views Insigne as a strong addition – as the veteran winger would join as a free agent.
Could Insigne Play At World Cup 2026?
Alongside a superb club career in Italy, Insigne has also been a valuable member of the Azzurri national team and played a huge role in the nation’s European Championship triumph in 2021.
Overall the 34-year-old has accumulated 54 caps for the Italian national team, with his last appearance coming in Italy’s shocking 1-0 defeat by North Macedonia in the World Cup 2022 playoffs.
Italy find themselves in the same position this year after a poor qualification campaign and the Azzurri will find out their World Cup 2026 playoff opponents on November 20th.
Insigne has been away from the national team setup for over three-years now, meaning his chances of competing at next year’s tournament are extremely slim.
The 34-year-old has expressed a desire to make a return to the Italian national team under Gennaro Gattuso and a strong performance in Serie A could bring a shocking return for Insigne.
