Luciano Spalletti lost his position as manager of the Italian national team in June 2025 and the 66-year-old is now considering options for his next job.

Why Was Luciano Spalletti Sacked?

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) decided to relieve Luciano Spalletti of his duties in June 2025, after the Azzurri suffered a streak of disappointing results.

During his time as Italy manager, the 66-year-old took charge of 24 matches, winning 12, drawing six and losing six, picking up just one victory in his final five matches.

Spalletti was in charge for one major tournament, as Italy were eliminated from the 2024 European Championships Ro16 following a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland.

Managing on the international stage brings it’s own difficulties in comparison to club level, which is something Zinedine Zidane will experience as the former Juventus star is close to becoming the next France manager.

However, it is a return to club management that is catching the eye of Spalletti, who has enjoyed lengthy spells with some of the biggest teams in Serie A.

His longest reign came in the Italian capital, overseeing 224 matches as Roma manager and guiding the Giallorossi to multiple trophies between 2005-2009.

Luciano Spalletti would eventually return to Roma in January 2016, but partied ways with the club in June 2017 to become the next Inter Milan manager.

The veteran coach was in charge of the Nerazzurri for two seasons, but failed to win any silveware during his time in Milan and was relieved of his duties in June 2019.

After two-years away from the sport, Spalletti came back to take charge of Napoli in July 2021 and completed his biggest achievement to date in his second season – winning the Serie A title.

Napoli had not won Italy’s biggest prize for 33-years and Spalletti guided the likes of Victor Osimhen and Khivcha Kvaratskhelia to soccer immortality.

His performance in Naples was what pushed the FIGC into hiring the Italian and Spalletti is now looking to replicate his success at Napoli with a new European side.

Who Will Luciano Spalletti Manage Next?

Finding a job in management can be extremely difficult for coaches, with some teams facing financial problems or failing to give new managers time.

The Serie A saw a host of managerial changes during the summer of 2025, with Inter, AC Milan, Juventus, Roma and Atalanta all appointing new head coaches for the 2025/26 season.

Spalletti will be very aware of the host of managers that have been linked to an Italian side, with Jose Mourinho also pushing for a return to Italy’s top division.

The 66-year-old will not be pushed into taking a job, as Spalletti boasts a wealth of experience in the sport and has a list of accolades that many managers would dream of.

A job that could become available in the near future is the role at Fiorentina, as Stefano Pioli has struggled to make an impact in his opening months in charge.

La Viola have picked up just two-points from their opening three league matches and faced a scare in the Europa Conference League qualifiers after Polissya scored two in the opening minutes of the second-leg.

Pioli will be given time, but if Spalletti is willing to wait and bide his time, then the 66-year-old could be first in line to take the managerial reins in Florence.
