Roma Shift Focus Towards Mathys Tel As Serie A Giants Cool Interest In Manchester United Forward
The Italian side are keen to add more attacking reinforcements in January.
Mathys Tel is firmly on Roma’s radar as the Serie A side seek an alternative to Joshua Zirkzee.
Gian Pieri Gasperini is prioritizing a new attacker and believes Tel would make a welcome January addition at the Stadio Olimpico.
As it stands, the Giallorossi are fourth in the table but have scored just 15 times across 13 matchdays. Gasperini knows that if his team is to challenge for the Scudetto, they must find the back of the net more frequently.
Mathys Tel Transfer News
Since joining Tottenham on a permanent deal in the summer, Mathys Tel has struggled for minutes. Although the Spurs faithful are beginning to warm to Tel, head coach Thomas Frank doesn’t appear to be a keen admirer.
So much so that the 20-year-old forward has started just three English Premier League games all season. The Frenchman has chipped in with two goals but he was also left out of the Champions League roster.
The former Bayern Munich prodigy wants a more prominent role and a temporary move away will provide said opportunity.
As it stands, Roma are the only side across Europe’s top five leagues who are showing an interest in the youngster. Now all that remains is for the Italians to prepare a suitable bid to try and lure Tel to Rome.
Roma Cool Interest In Joshua Zirkzee
Last month, AC Milan legend Ruud Gullit said Joshua Zirkzee should return to Serie A. The Dutch forward has struggled at Manchester United since signing from Bologna in 2024.
Roma were very much in the running for Zirkzee but have since shifted their attention to Mathys Tel. Not because they don’t want him anymore, but his game time at Old Trafford is set to increase.
An injury to Benjamin Sesko has provided Zirkzee with a number of opportunities to impress. Something of which he did against Crystal Palace on November 30 after he netted the equalizer in an eventual 2-1 win.
From the Giallorossi’s perspective, a deal could still be struck. However, it will be much harder to navigate so Gian Piero Gasperini is focusing more on Mathys Tel.
Roma’s Goalscoring Problems
Although Roma are very much in the race for the Serie A title, the Giallorossi’s lack of goals is a cause for concern. Especially as their rivals have all scored more so far this season.
Perhaps the Romans saving grace is their watertight defense. They have only conceded seven times this term, which is the joint-best across Europe’s top five leagues.
In offense, loan signing Evan Ferguson has failed to impress and Artem Dovbyk has also struggled. Talks of a new Paulo Dybala contract appear to have swayed the Argentine’s head. In fact, the club are hesitant on offering new terms owing to his vast demands.
And of course, his injuries have not helped. Dybala – alongside Ferguson – has missed a number of games this season. These factors have of course blunted Gian Piero Gasperini’s attack.
Nonetheless, if Tottenham are willing to let Mathys Tel move to Italy next month, the youngster has the potential to help the Giallorossi fire on all cylinders once again.
