Fabrizio Romano Confirms Chelsea Approach For Milan Star Goalkeeper

Start

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea have made an approach for Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

The Italian sports journalist went on to add that Maignan is yet to sign a new contract at the San Siro. That has now accelerated the Blues interest who are currently in negotiations with the Rossoneri.

Enzo Maresca’s side are looking to exploit Maignan’s hesitation of extending his stay in Italy. The recently crowned Conference League champions are reportedly looking to add a world class goalkeeper to their ranks and see Maignan as the perfect fit.

Is Mike Maignan Good Enough For Chelsea?

Many Chelsea fans replied to Fabrizio Romano’s X post indicating that they are happy to be linked with Mike Maignan. However, others weren’t so sure.

Nonetheless, Maignan is considered to be one of the finest goalkeepers in the world. He is the club captain at Milan and has 30 international caps for France.

Last season, the 6 ft 3 in star kept 13 clean sheets in Serie A and shipped 41 goals from 37 appearances. In all competitions, the 29-year-old boasted 15 shutouts to his name and conceded 59 times.

All of that whilst Milan endured one of their worst campaigns in recent memories. If he does leave, Brighton stopper Bart Verbruggen has been tipped as a potential Mike Maignan replacement.

Will Robert Sanchez Quit Chelsea?

For those who regularly track the best offshore sportsbooks, the transfer odds for Robert Sanchez to quit Chelsea would have shortened considerably.

Perhaps even more so after Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Blues are pushing to sign Mike Maignan. Sanchez hasn’t had the smoothest of rides during his two years in between the sticks at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard has often lacked confidence and was benched six times in the English Premier League last season. However, his stats were still reasonably impressive.

It’s unlikely that Sanchez would want to be a back up stopper to Maignan. Aged 27, Sanchez is heading into his prime years but it does appear his days with Enzo Maresca’s side are numbered.

Mike Maignan Transfer Value

The current Mike Maignan transfer value stands at €25million. That is according to Transfermarkt and is a reflection of how strong a ‘keeper Maignan is.

Especially as he only has 12 months to run on his current deal with Milan. From Chelsea’a perspective, they would likely test the Rossoneri’s resolve by offering a fee slightly less than his value.

A lot will hinge on whether Maignan decides not to pen a new deal. If that’s the case, the Diavolo would be better off cashing in now than risk losing him on a free next summer.

Who Did Milan Sign Mike Maignan From?

Mike Maignan joined Milan from Lille in the 2021 summer transfer window. The France international made 180 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit before transferring to Italy.

During his time at the San Siro, Maignan has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Which is no easy feat for a €15m capture who was tasked with replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Maignan was part of the Rossoneri side who won the Scudetto in 2021-22 and also lifted the Supercoppa Italiana in 2024.
