Who Has Managed The Most Serie A Games? Fiorentina Boss Stefano Pioli Reaches Rare Milestone

To hold the title of ‘most Serie A games managed’ is an honor that is only reserved for the most loyal of head coaches. 

Fiorentina’s boss Stefano Pioli joined an elite list of names having overseen his 500th top-flight Italian match during the 2-1 defeat to AC Milan on October 19.

However, Pioli has plenty of names ahead of him to reach the top spot. In fact, the 60-year-old would need to manage for another 7-8 seasons to overtake the current leader.

Stefano Pioli Has Managed 500 Serie A Games

Although talk of the next Fiorentina manager has gathered pace in recent weeks owing to La Viola’s poor start to 2025-26, Stefano Pioli has joined a prestigious list.

The loss to AC Milan was his 500th in the dugout in Serie A. Even though the result didn’t go Pioli’s way, he can still be mightily proud of the rare accomplishment.

Pioli’s 501st match in Italy’s elite soccer division will come against Bologna on October 26. The clash at the Artemio Franchi Stadium is hugely pivotal as the 60-year-old has failed to register a single domestic victory.

Stefano Pioli’s Serie A Managerial Record

Of his 500 Serie A games managed for AC Milan, Bologna, Chievo Verona, Fiorentina, Inter Milan, Lazio and Parma, Stefano Pioli has registered 217 wins.

In terms of losses, Piolo has 148 to his name with the remaining 135 fixtures ending in stalemate. His most successful spell came at the Rossoneri whereby he won the 2021-22 Scudetto.

Pioli also won the Serie A Coach of the Year in the same year and won three Coach of the Month awards as Milan won their first title since 2011.

Most Serie A Games Managed

The most Serie A games managed throughout the league’s history is legendary head coach Carlo Mazzone. He oversaw 792 games which included spells at the likes of Napoli, Roma, Bologna and Fiorentina.

Although Mazzone never won the Italian top-flight, he did win the 1998 Intertoto Cup whilst with the Rossoblu and also earned promotion from Serie B with Lecce. He was entered into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2019 owing to his distinguished career.

Trailing Mazzone on 787 Serie A games is Nereo Rocco. Widely regarded as one of the greatest managers of all-time, Rocco won two Scudetto’s with AC Milan as well as two European Cups. 

He would also lift the Coppa Italia on three separate occasions as well as the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup (2). Like Mazzone, Rocco was entered into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

Taking the last podium place is legendary Juventus manager Giovanni Trapattoni. The 86-year-old would manage 689 games throughout his Serie A career. 

During his time in Turin, Trapattoni won the title six times. He also won the European Cup in 1984-85 and won the UEFA Cup on two occasions. He also lifted the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup.

Furthermore, Trappattoni also won the Scudetto during his time with Inter Milan. In 2013, ESPN named him as the 12th Greatest Manager of All Time.
