The latest Rafael Leao injury update has revealed the Milan star is back in training ahead of Sunday’s clash against Bologna.
Leao hasn’t been risked in the opening two games of the 2025-26 Serie A season. The Portuguese international sustained a calf strain against Bari in the Coppa Italia.
That injury – which occurred on August 17 – has kept Leao sidelined as more of a precautionary measure. With it being a muscle injury, head coach Max Allegri didn’t want to rush him back into the roster.
Rafael Leao Injury Update
Last month, Milan’s Coppa Italia victory over Bari was marred by an injury to Rafael Leao. At first, the calf problem wasn’t deemed to be too serious.
However, the Rossoneri haven’t allowed Leao to feature in the two Serie A games of the 2025-26 campaign. Now, reports from MilanNews have confirmed that the Portuguese winger has been training during the international break.
That has occurred even though Max Allegri has informed the remainder of his roster they are not due back until September 9.
In fact, Leao has been training – mainly alone – to ensure he has the best possible chance to return back to the field at the earliest opportunity.
Will Rafael Leao Play Against Bologna?
As it stands, it’s unknown whether Rafael Leao will play against Bologna on Sunday. The match itself has extra importance owing to a potential Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe showdown.
It will also be the first meeting between the clubs since the 2024-25 Coppa Italia final. Dan Ndoye scored the only goal of the game to condemn the Rossoneri to defeat in May.
However, if Leao does feature, Max Allegri’s side will be confident of picking up their second win of the season. After a surprise 2-1 defeat at home to Cremonese on MD1, Allegri’s charges got off the mark against Lecce on MD2.
Naturally, Leao’s participation won’t be determined until at least Friday but the fact he is training hard to regain fitness suggests he will play at least a small part.
Rafael Leao Milan Stats
Alongside USMNT star Christian Pulisic, Milan winger Rafael Leao is widely considered as one of the best players in the Rossoneri’s roster. And his stats demonstrate why.
In 261 appearances across all competitions, Leao has scored 71 times. He has also registered 62 assists since joining the club six years ago.
Leao’s long-term future has often been the source of debate. A whole host of English Premier League sides have often been linked alongside the likes of Bayern and Barcelona.
Nonetheless, Milan has rebuffed all approaches and Leao has remained loyal to the Italian giants. A huge fans favorite at the San Siro, Leao will be desperate to get back on to the field this Sunday and show supporters what he is all about.
