Napoli Star Scott McTominay ‘Open’ To Premier League Return As Newcastle Prepare Bid

Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay could be on his way back to the English Premier League in January. 

McTominay has struggled during his second season at the Maradona Stadium and Newcastle are willing to test Napoli’s resolve.

The Magpies are understood to be in the market for a new midfielder and view McTominay as the ideal candidate to provide more strength in depth in the middle of the pitch.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are considering a mid-season bid for Scott McTominay. 

Doubts have surrounded the Scotland international’s future at Napoli after a whirlwind debut campaign.

The outlet goes on to suggest that McTominay would in fact be ‘open‘ to a move to St James’ Park. 

Head coach Eddie Howe is a keen admirer of the midfielder and he came close to signing the former Manchester United man in 2023.

McTominay is understood to be unsettled in Italy. That despite winning the Serie A MVP award and helping Napoli to the Scudetto last term.

After his remarkable reinvention from his Manchester United days, it’s thought that McTominay is struggling to adapt to his new-found fame in Naples. His status has surged dramatically after his stunning form in 2024-25.

With that in mind, the Toon Army believe they can offer the perfect resolution. Competition for places will be tough in the North East, though. 

Former AC Milan star Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton are the preferred midfield trio. 

The Carabao Cup winners aren’t the only side in the running for McTominay. Arsenal, Everton and the Red Devils are all monitoring the Scot’s situation in Italy. 

What Is Scott McTominay’s Price Tag?

Having cost €30.5million in August 2024, Napoli have set a huge asking price for Scott McTominay amid interest from the Premier League of €80-85m which was put in place amid interest from Everton. 

It’s unlikely many potential suitors will be willing to pay that much. Especially Newcastle who typically opt for signing younger talents – and McTominay is close to turning 29. 

However, his performances for Napoli and Scotland have warranted a sizable profit to be received. Should the Serie A champions decide to part ways with McTominay. 

Various sports outlets are suggesting that a deal could be struck for approximately €60-70m. That can still be considered a steep price but Antonio Conte’s side is under no pressure to sell. 

McTominay still has three years left on his current deal. Although the Magpies are keen, it remains to be seen whether they would be able to afford such an outlay on just one player. 

Do Napoli Need To Sell Players?

In theory, Napoli don’t have to sell players but their financial situation could be improved with a number of large sales of first-team stars. 

Winning the league in 2024-25 and regular Champions League appearances have boosted overall club revenues. However, the Gli Azzurri were one of the highest Serie A spenders in the summer. 

So far, many of their new acquisitions have struggled and their fees haven’t been justified. 

Approximately €40m will be spent on loanee Rasmus Hojlund – should Antonio Conte’s side finish in the top four this term. 

Elsewhere, Kevin De Bruyne’s long-term injury means Conte would be light in the middle of the pitch should Scott McTominay be sold. Especially with Frank Anguissa also crocked. 

A temporary deal for Kobbie Mainoo has been mooted which would increase the midfield options in Naples. 

But from McTominay’s perspective, if he does want to leave in January, Newcastle will do their utmost to lure him to St James’ Park.
