Arsenal have parted ways with Takehiro Tomiyasu by mutual consent and according to reports, a host of Serie A sides are interested in the Japanese defender.
Why Has Tomiyasu Left Arsenal?
The Japanese defender has seen his contract with the Gunners be terminated following an injury-ridden season, where Tomiyasu played just six minutes of football.
Unfortunately for the 26-year-old, his current knee injury is set to keep him out of action for another five months after undergoing surgery in February of this year.
Initially, Tomiyasu’s contract with Arsenal was set to expire at the end of the 2025/26 season, however, both parties have agreed to terminate the deal ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Tomiyasu leaves the club after almost four-years, signing from Bologna in August 2021 for around $20 million and the defender made 84 appearances under Mikel Arteta.
The 26-year-old failed to win any major silverware during his time in north London, with his only accolade coming via a Community Shield victory in 2023.
Arsenal will be looking to end this wait for silverware next season and the Gunners are one of the favorites to win the Premier League on the betting apps.
Tomiyasu will not be a part of any Arsenal success going forward and the Gunners already have multiple options to replace the Japanese international.
Ben White, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly have taken up the full-back spots for Arteta, meaning Tomiyasu would have struggled to find a place when returning from injury.
As Tomiyasu is now a free agent, multiple clubs around the globe are willing to make a low-risk move for the 26-year-old and accordign to reports, multiple Serie A sides are keen.
Which Serie A Sides Are Interested In Takehiro Tomiyasu?
The former Arsenal star has played in Italy, making 61 Serie A appearances for Bologna between 2019-2021, where he impressed greatly under Marco Di Vaio.
His reputation since then has taken a slight hit however, after dealing with multiple injuries and failing to make a major impact on the Arsenal squad.
However, according to reports, both Fiorentina and Roma are interested in signing the free agent this summer as both sides look to move up the Serie A table.
Fiorentina finished sixth in the league last season, qualifying for the Europa Conference League and the Italian side also reached the ECL semi-finals before suffering a two-legged defeat against Real Betis.
The Florence-based side have already involved themselves in a host of transfer possibilities, most notably targeting Tottenham Hotspur striker, Richarlison – as Moise Kean nears a summer departure.
As for Roma, Europa League football will return to the Stadio Olimpico after the Italian side were eliminated by Athletic Club in the round of 16 last season.
Gian Piero Gasperini will take the reins for the 2025/26 season, as the veteran manager decided to leave Atalanta and begin a new venture in Italy.
