Marco Verratti Names One Key Condition That Would End His Long Awaited Return To Italian Soccer

Start

Marco Verratti has picked out the one condition that would bring him back to Italian soccer, as the midfielder has never competed in Serie A.

Who Does Marco Verratti Play For?

The Italian midfield maestro has enjoyed a stellar career since debuting for Pescara in August 2010 at just 15-years-old, before earning a $15 million move to PSG in July 2012.

During his time in France, Verratti made 416 appearances for the Parisian side and picked up nine Ligue 1 titles, nine Trophee des Champions, six Coupe de France trophies and six Coupe de la Ligue trophies.

Verratti also won the Serie B title with Pescara before heading to France and went on to cement his place in the Italian national side, winning the European Championship in 2021.

However, in September 2023 the Italian midfielder made the stunning choice to leave PSG and move to Qatar, as Verratti signed for Al Arabi for around $45m.

In a recent interview, Verratti revealed that he wanted to leave Paris as winning became ‘monotonous’, with PSG being favorites to win the Ligue 1 title every year on offshore betting sites.

He said: “I needed a new challenge and new motivations. In Paris, winning had become something almost taken for granted. Here I rediscovered something like a ‘childlike’, the joy of winning, like when I was a kid. Pure happiness. In Paris, winning had become monotonous, repetitive.”

The Italian went on to make 40 appearances across two seasons but failed to bring any silverware to the team and the 32-year-old left as a free agent this summer – joining fierce rivals, Al Duhail SC.

Why Has Marco Verratti Never Played In Serie A?

Despite being regarded as one of the best Italian players over the last ten to twenty years, Verratti has never played in the nation’s top-flight – despite heavy rumors of a move in the past.

Prior to his move this summer, many expected Verratti to complete a Serie A transfer as a free agent this summer but there were no talks with any side.

After earning promotion to Serie A with Pescara in 2012, the midfielder moved to PSG before he could play a single minute in the division and has not returned since.

However, Verratti has kept in touch with his roots and recently acquired a 50% stake in Pescara which means playing for another team in Serie A would need approval from the various boards in Italy.

The 32-year-old would be allowed to play for Pescara in Serie A as this does not breach any rules or regulations and this is something that interests Verratti in the future.

Verratti said: “The dream is to play even just one minute in Serie A with Pescara. We always need to give ourselves a goal: maybe I’ll achieve it now that I’m co-president with a 50% stake.

“You see, only for my Pescara I would have done what I truly wanted to do: they gave me everything and I wanted to repay them from the heart.”
