41-Year-Old Thiago Silva Eyes World Cup Swansong as Rumors of AC Milan Return Intensify

Thiago Silva has announced he will be leaving his native Brazil after two years at boyhood club Fluminense.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Silva will be available immediately in January as a free agent, with his intention to try another ‘new chapter’ and preferably back in Europe.

Sensational reports in Italy throughout December have linked the 41-year-old with a return to AC Milan, with whom he spent three years between 2009 and 2012.

Those rumors have only intensified after Silva’s latest announcement. The belief is manager Max Allegri is keen to buttress of a youthful defense with veteran experience – particularly after struggling to contain Torino and Sassuolo in recent matches.

Allegri recently addressed rumors of Silva’s return, saying he “hasn’t called” him, but did continue by praising the years the pair spent together in Milan.

“I spent two wonderful years with Thiago, an extraordinary player,” he said.

“He continues to compete at a high level. The club handles the transfer market. We have to focus on the matches, taking them one by one, because you can’t play more than one at a time.”

Silva’s agent ruled out a move in January, but that was before he cut short his contract, which his agent initially said he intended to see out.

Thiago Silva is Eyeing a Brazil World Cup Spot

Thiago Silva’s decision to leave Fluminense is fuelled by a desire to make a romantic return to the Brazil squad, in time for next summer’s World Cup.

Silva captained the national team at World Cup in both 2018 and 2022, but has not been seen in a Brazil shirt since they were beaten by Croatia in the quarterfinals.

In a recent interview with France Football, Silva said: “Can you imagine if I end my career with a World Cup title?

“It would be the absolute dream and the perfect moment to stop.”

He later admitted that his contract with Fluminense, which was originally due to end in June 2026, was “premeditated” to finish right before the World Cup, where he would hopefully finish his playing career.

That reality is still some way off despite being a commanding presence for Fluminense since returning, where he notably was named in the Club World Cup Team of the Tournament last summer.

Could Thiago Silva Return to AC Milan?

While Max Allegri remained coy over any potential return for Silva, rumors have scarcely died down since his future was called into question.

Silva has made his intentions to return to Europe clear in order to put himself in the best position for making Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad, and Milan may be the perfect environment to do just that.

The Rossoneri are excelling under Allegri as they continue to rival neighbours Inter, but recent performances have shown frailties in their defense that could prove unsustainable.

Two goals conceded against Torino, and then the exact same less than a week later against newly-promoted Sassuolo – only to be saved by two goals from Davide Bartesaghi –  has threatened to de-rail Milan’s positive early season form.

Strahinja Pavlovic, Matteo Gabbia and Fikayo Tomori all have the necessary experience to compete, but marshalled by a veteran Silva means he would be a welcomed addition to the dressing room.

This current Milan team is largely made of players who have never experienced what it is like to compete for a league title, so the addition of Silva – much like summer arrival Luka Modric – could help to guide them in the right direction.
