Giovanni Reyna is reportedly keen on a Serie A move, despite the USMNT signing for Borussia Monchengladbach just under two months ago.
What Is Happening To Giovanni Reyna?
The USMNT star joined Borussia Monchengladbach for around €4 million in the summer transfer window, as his time with Borussia Dortmund came to a dwindling end.
Reyna played 74 minutes in his opening appearance for Gladbach, before coming on as a substitute during a 4-0 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt on September 21st.
Any momentum the American was building came to an end after Reyna suffered a thigh injury in training, that has caused him to be sidelined for the Bundesliga’s side’s last two fixtures.
At just 22-years-old, Reyna still has a long career ahead of him but his recent performances have left many questioning whether he can live up to expectation.
Similarly to Christian Pulisic, who is close to agreeing a new contract with AC Milan, Reyna began his European soccer venture with Borussia Dortmund.
His performances for Dortmund during the opening few seasons were enough to earn a place in the USMNT roster, picking up 32 caps for his nation.
However, his time with the Yellow and Blacks after Edin Terzic lost faith in the young midfielder, having questions over his injury history and defensive capability.
This led to a loan move to Nottingham Forest for the 2023/24 season, where Reyna struggled with injuries once again and failed to make a mark in England.
Eventually, the 22-yea-old would return to Dortmund for the 2024/25 appearances, making 16 Bundesliga appearances – but did not perform at the required level.
Now, Borussia Monchengladbach are questioning whether Reyna can put in consistent performances and the USMNT could be shown the exit in January.
Will Giovanni Reyna Move To Serie A?
During the 2025 summer transfer window, Reyna was heavily linked with a move to Parma and agreed terms with the Serie A side, however, the two clubs could not agree a fee.
This led to his move to Gladbach and Reyna remained in Germany, which was not his initial hope after forming a strong agreement with Parma in the summer.
Reyna will have seen the success that Pulisic has found in Italy, as the AC Milan star recently became the highest scoring USMNT star in European soccer.
With the 2026 World Cup right around the corner, Reyna will be looking to reclaim his place in the American side, as playing at a World Cup in your own country is a once in a lifetime achievement.
The Borussia Monchengladbach star has made just one appearance for the USMNT in the last year, playing in the 2-1 defeat to Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League Finals third-place playoff.
Reyna was one of the star names to be left out of the USMNT Gold Cup squad, with the likes of Pulisic and Tyler Adams also choosing to miss out.
A loan move away from Gladbach in the January window appears to be the most likely outcome for Reyna, if he decides to move elsewhere and Parma may reignite their interest after a poor start to the season.
