After making one of the worst Serie A starts to a season in history, Fiorentina needs a swift upturn in fortunes.  

Head coach Stefano Pioli is very much on the brink after the matchday 10 defeat to Lecce. Medon Berisha scored the only goal of the game in Florence after 23 minutes.

La Viola’s dreadful opening to 2025-26 has come as somewhat of a surprise to soccer supporters. Especially as the club flourished last year and have the likes of David de Gea and Moise Kean in their ranks.

Is 2025-26 Fiorentina’s Worst Serie A Start In Their History?

Yes. 2025-26 is Fiorentina’s worst ever start to a Serie A campaign in the club’s history. La Viola has drawn four and lost six games so far this season.

The unwanted record was actually set after the 3-0 defeat to Inter Milan on October 29. That meant they went nine games without victory which had never previously occurred.

Head coach Stefano Pioli may not be in place for next weekend’s huge clash against Genoa. As it stands, the Grifone are also winless and are rock bottom of the table.

The Worst Serie A Starts In History

Although the likes of Thiago Motta, Paolo Vanoli and Alessandro Nesta are all in the running to be the next Fiorentina manager, current head coach Stefano Pioli hasn’t overseen Serie A’s worst ever start.

That unwanted honor belongs to Benevento. In the 2017-18 season, Gli Stregoni lost 14 straight matches and didn’t register their first point until early December. Unsurprisingly, they were relegated to Serie B at the end of the campaign.

This season, Genoa are yet to win in their nine opening fixtures. They could secure their first win against Sassuolo on matchday 10 but currently occupy the 20th spot with just three points registered.

Staying in the current campaign, Verona and Pisa are also without victory. The former has five draws and five defeats to their name with the latter entertaining six stalemates and four losses.

Will Stefano Pioli Be Sacked From Fiorentina?

Fiorentina are considered one of Italy’s biggest clubs and their form in 2025-26 has been hugely surprising. Even more so that head coach Stefano Pioli is one of Serie A’s most reputable managers.

Pioli has reportedly refused to resign from his position in Florence. However, the La Viola board could well dismiss the 60-year-old in the coming days.

If that wasn’t to happen, Pioli would absolutely need to beat Mainz in the Conference League and Genoa on matchday 11. Interestingly, Ange Postecoglou is in line to replace Patrick Vieira, who was sacked by the Grifone on November 1.

Postecoglu is also a long short to replace Pioli. The main contenders so far include Thiago Motta, Paolo Vanoli, former head coach Raffaele Palladino, Alessandro Nesta and Daniele De Rossi.

When Was The Last Time Fiorentina Were Relegated From Serie A?

The last time La Viola was relegated from Serie A was in 2001-02. In fact, they were actually demoted to Serie C2 having been declared bankrupt after years of mismanagement under owner Vittorio Cecchi Gori.

However, Fiorentina rose back through the leagues and returned to Italy’s elite soccer division for the 2004-05 campaign. They would finish 16th that term.

That is their lowest top-flight finish (alongside the 2018-19 campaign) since returning to Serie A. As things stand, that position would be very welcome owing to their current struggles.

Granted, only a quarter of the 2025-26 season has been played but betting markets already list Fiorentina as short as +600 to finish in the bottom three.
